World Boxing Association
The World Boxing Association (WBA), formerly known as the National Boxing Association (NBA), is an international professional boxing organization based in Panama. The WBA awards its world championship title at the professional level. Founded in the United States in 1921 by 13 state representatives as the NBA, it is the oldest major organization regulating fights. In 1962, it changed its name in recognition of boxing's growing popularity around the world and began to admit other nations as members. By 1975, a majority of its members were Latin American nations and the organization headquarters was moved to Panama City, Panama. It moved again in the 1990s to Venezuela before returning to Panama in 2007. Alongside the World Boxing Council (WBC), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO), it was one of four major organizations which sanctions professional boxing bouts. Rocky Mattioli
Rocky Mattioli (born Rocco Mattioli, 20 September 1953) is an Italian-born Australian former boxer at junior middleweight, and former world champion. Rocky was the 2004 Inductee for the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame Moderns category. Career Mattioli was born in Ripa Teatina, near Chieti, in Abruzzo in central Italy. He emigrated to Australia with his family at the age of six and lived in Morwell, Victoria. He turned professional in 1970 and started training with Italian trainer Arnold Rossi. In 1977, he captured the WBC Light Middleweight Title with a KO over Eckhard Dagge. He defended the title twice before losing it to Maurice Hope in 1979 by TKO. In 1980, he had a rematch with Hope, but again was TKO'd, in the 11th round. Keith Mullings
Keith Mullings (8 January 1968 – 29 May 2021) was a Jamaican professional boxer who competed from 1993 to 2001. Professional career Mullings turned pro in 1993 and challenged Raúl Márquez for the IBF light middleweight title in 1997, but lost a split decision. Most of Mullings losses were close or controversial, until late in his career. In Dec of 1997, Mullings shocked the world with a ninth-round TKO over WBC and lineal light middleweight champion Terry Norris. After one defense, he lost the belt to Javier Castillejo in 1999 via majority decision in the opponent's hometown of Madrid. Later that year he took on former Olympian David Reid for the WBA light middleweight title, but lost a decision. In 2000 he lost a decision to Winky Wright, and retired in 2001, after his only knockout loss. Luis Santana (boxer)
Luis Santana (born November 19, 1958, in La Romana, Dominican Republic), is a retired professional boxer who fought in the super welterweight (154 lb) division. He was the World Boxing Council's world Super Welterweight champion. Career Santana turned pro in 1981 and challenged Simon Brown for the IBF Welterweight Title in 1989, but lost a unanimous decision. In 1994 he got another title shot against WBC Light Middleweight Title holder Terry Norris and won the title when Norris was disqualified in the 5th round for downing Santana with an illegal blow to the back of the head or rabbit punch. After a lengthy delay, the ringside doctor ruled Santana unable to continue. Norris, along with some media members, believed that Santana was faking the injury in order to win the championship and presumably, a rematch fight with Norris. Simon Brown (boxer)
Simon Brown (born August 15, 1963) is a Jamaican former professional boxer. Known as "Mantequilla", a name given to him by his famous trainer Jose 'Pepe' Correa, Brown was two-weight world champion in the welterweight and light-middleweight divisions, and at one point considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in boxing. Professional boxing career Welterweight Brown began his career in 1982 at the age of 19 and ran off a string of 21 consecutive victories, prior to losing a split decision to Marlon Starling for the USBA welterweight title in 1985. Simon won three consecutive bouts, including a victory against undefeated former Olympian Shawn O'Sullivan to line up a shot at the vacant IBF welterweight title against Tyrone Trice. Terry Norris (boxer)
Terry Wayne Norris (born June 17, 1967) is an American former boxer, prizefighter and a three time world champion in the light-middleweight (super-welterweight) division. Originally from Lubbock, Texas, he fought out of San Diego. Early years and amateur career A star baseball player during his high school years, Norris bypassed a career on the diamond for one in the ring, claiming an amateur record of 291–4, winning 4 Texas State Golden Gloves titles. Displaying a stunning combination of hand and foot speed as well as the ability to throw dizzying combos, Norris' athletic ability was an uncanny attribute in the ring. John Mugabi
John Mugabi (born March 4, 1960) is a Ugandan former professional boxer who competed from 1980 to 1999. He held the WBC super-welterweight title from 1989 to 1990, and challenged twice for world titles at middleweight, including the undisputed championship. Mugabi was part of an exceptionally talented group of light-middleweights and middleweights during a "golden era" of the 1980s which included Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Wilfred Benítez, and Roberto Durán. As an amateur, Mugabi won a silver medal in the welterweight division at the 1980 Summer Olympics, and was the only medallist for Uganda at the event. Donald Curry
Donald Curry (born September 7, 1961), is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1980 to 1991, and in 1997. He held the WBA world welterweight title from 1983 to 1986, the undisputed world welterweight title from 1985 to 1986 and the WBC light middleweight title from 1988 to 1989, and challenged once for the IBF middleweight title in 1990. In 2019, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Amateur career Curry's amateur record is usually listed as 400–4, but it is sometimes listed as 396–4 and 400–6. Curry thinks he might have had more than 404 bouts, but he is sure he had only four losses. Curry was originally trained by Wesley Gale Parker out of Fort Worth, Texas. Gianfranco Rosi (boxer)
Gianfranco Rosi (born 5 August 1957) retired Italian boxer who was a two-time world champion in the light-middleweight division. Amateur career Rosi had a record of 94 wins - 2 losses - 4 draws. Highlights: * 1976 Italian Light-Welterweight Champion * 1977 Italian Welterweight Champion Professional career Rosi turned pro in 1979 and won the WBC light-middleweight title in 1987 by decisioning Lupe Aquino. He lost the belt in 1988 when he was dominated by Donald Curry. Rosi was down once in 2nd, 4th and 8th and down twice in 7th, failing to answer the bell starting the 10th round. Lupe Aquino
Isaias Guadalupe "Lupe" Aquino (born 23 January 1963) is a Mexican former professional boxer who competed from 1981 to 1999 and held the WBC Light Middleweight title in 1987. Aquino, known as "Lupe", turned pro in 1981 and won the WBC light middleweight title in 1987 with a decision over Duane Thomas. He lost the title in his first defense via a close decision to Gianfranco Rosi. In 1988 Aquino took on John David Jackson for the inaugural WBO light middleweight title. In the fight, Aquino was put down in 1st and retired after the 7th round. Duane Thomas (boxer)
Duane Thomas (February 1, 1961 – June 2000), was an American professional boxer in the super welterweight (154 lb) division. He was born in Detroit, Michigan. Professional career Thomas turned pro in 1979 and won the Vacant USBA Light middleweight title in 1983 against Nino Gonzalez. He would go on to win the WBC Light Middleweight Title with a 3rd-round TKO over John Mugabi in 1986 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Thomas would lose the title eight months later, in Merignac, France, in his first defense to Lupe Aquino by decision. In 1988 he challenged WBC Light Middleweight Title holder Gianfranco Rosi, but was dominated and TKO'd in the 7th. He was an elite fighter during his era.
