Abda (Bible)
The name Abda (Hebrew עַבְדָּא) means ''servant,'' or perhaps is an abbreviated form of ''servant of YHWH''. There are two people by this name in the Hebrew Bible. *An Abda mentioned in passing when Solomon set Adoniram son of Abda in charge of forced labor for Solomon's building projects (). The forced labor is referred to by the word "levy" in the Revised Version and "tribute" in the King James Version. *A Levite of the family of Jeduthun (), also called Obadiah (). He was the son of Shammua and served in Jerusalem under Nehemiah. Where the Masoretic Text has ''Abda,'' the Septuagint, depending on the location and manuscript, has names such as ''Abao, Ephra, Edram, Ioreb, Obeb,'' and ''Abdias.''Cheyne and Black (1899), ''Encyclopaedia Biblica ''Encyclopaedia Biblica: A Critical Dictionary of the Literary, Political and Religion History, the Archeology, Geography and Natural History of the Bible'' (1899), edited by Thomas Kelly Cheyne and J. Abarim
Abarim () is the Hebrew name used in the Bible for a mountain range "across the Jordan", understood as east of the Jordan Rift Valley, i.e. in Transjordan, to the east and south-east of the Dead Sea, extending from Mount Nebo — its highest point — in the north, perhaps to the Arabian desert in the south. Etymology and description According to Cheyne and Black, its Hebrew meaning is "'Those-on-the-other-side'—i.e., of the Jordan." The Vulgate (Deuteronomy 32:49) gives its etymological meaning as ''passages''. Its northern part was called Pisgah, and the highest peak of Pisgah was Mount Nebo (Numbers 23:14; 27:12; 21:20; 32:47; Deuteronomy 3:27; 34:1; 32:49). These mountains are mentioned several times in the Bible: * Balaam blessed Israel the second time from the top of Mount Pisgah (Numbers 23:14) * From "the top of Pisgah" i.e. Mount Nebo, an area which belonged to Moab, Moses surveyed the Promised Land (Numbers 27:12 and Deuteronomy 3:27; 32:49), and there he died (34 ...

Abana River
The Barada ( / ALA-LC: ''Baradā'') is the main river of Damascus, the capital city of Syria. Etymology The word "Barada" is thought to be derived from the word ''barid'', which means "cold" in Semitic languages. The ancient Greek name (), means "streaming with gold". Topography and source Throughout the arid plateau region east of Damascus, oases, streams, and a few minor rivers that empty into swamps and small lakes provide water for local irrigation. Most important of these is the Barada, a river that rises in the Anti-Lebanon Mountains and disappears into the desert. The Barada flows out of the karst spring of Ain al-Fijah, about north west of Damascus in the Anti-Lebanon Mountains, but its true source is Lake Barada, a small lake that is also a karst spring located about from Al-Zabadani. The Barada descends through a steep, narrow gorge named "Rabwe" before it arrives at Damascus, where it divides into seven branches that irrigate the Al Ghutah (الغوطة) oasis ...

Abagtha
Abagtha () was a court official (or a eunuch) of King Ahasuerus. He is mentioned once in the Book of Esther (). According to this narrative, King Ahasuerus commanded Abagtha and six other officials to parade the Queen Vashti before the king and his ministers in the crown jewels. Her refusal led to her demise and the selection of Esther as the new queen of the Persian Empire. According to Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones, the name Abagtha seems to be the same as ‘Bigtha’ (Old Persian: Bagadāta, ‘god-given’, ‘whose law is divine’, or ‘gif of god’), but with a prefix, and its etymology may be ‘law received from god’. Alternatively, it may derive from the Avestan word ''gabata'', ‘fortunate one’. In Esther 1:10, Abagtha is referred as a סָרִיס (''sarīs''). This Hebrew word, translated eunuch A eunuch ( , ) is a male who has been castration, castrated. Throughout history, castration often served a specific social function. The earliest records for intentional c ...

Abaddon
The Hebrew term Abaddon ( , meaning "destruction", "doom") and its Greek equivalent Apollyon (, ''Apollúōn'' meaning "Destroyer") appear in the Bible as both a place of destruction and an angel of the abyss. In the Hebrew Bible, ''abaddon'' is used with reference to a bottomless pit, often appearing alongside the place Sheol ( ), meaning the resting place of dead peoples. In the Book of Revelation of the New Testament, an angel called Abaddon is described as the king of an army of locusts; his name is first transcribed in Koine Greek (Revelation 9:11—"whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon") as , and then translated , ''Apollyon''. The Vulgate and the Douay–Rheims Bible have additional notes not present in the Greek text, "in Latin ''Exterminans''", being the Latin word for "destroyer". In medieval Christian literature, Abaddon's portrayal diverges significantly, as seen in the " Song of Roland", an 11th-century epic poem. Abaddon is depicted as part of a fictional trinity, ...

Aaron
According to the Old Testament of the Bible, Aaron ( or ) was an Israelite prophet, a high priest, and the elder brother of Moses. Information about Aaron comes exclusively from religious texts, such as the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament ( Luke, Acts, and Hebrews), and the Quran. The Hebrew Bible relates that, unlike Moses, who grew up in the Egyptian royal court, Aaron and his elder sister Miriam remained with their kinsmen in the northeastern region of the Nile Delta. When Moses first confronted the Egyptian king about the enslavement of the Israelites, Aaron served as his brother's spokesman to the Pharaoh. Part of the Law given to Moses at Sinai granted Aaron the priesthood for himself and his male descendants, and he became the first High Priest of the Israelites. Levitical priests or '' kohanim'' are traditionally believed and halakhically required to be of direct patrilineal descent from Aaron. According to the Book of Numbers, Aaron died at 123 years of ...
