Linda McCartney Cycling Team
The Linda McCartney Racing Team was a British professional road bicycle racing team. History The team began in 1998 with Linda McCartney Foods, maker of vegetarian food, sponsoring vegetarian riders and staff. The company was started by Sir Paul McCartney's wife, Linda. Team success would promote vegetarianism and Linda McCartney Foods. The team was to compete in Britain before expanding to international events. It was initially composed of British riders with more experienced riders joining later to improve credentials for the UCI World Cup and the Grand Tours. It was the first British team to ride the Giro d'Italia but the increase in cost as the team and its commitments grew — Linda McCartney Foods did not continue sponsorship — led the team to disband in 2001 with reported debts of more than US$1m and a dispute with the UCI over riders' wages. Road bicycle racing is the cycle sport discipline of road cycling, held primarily on paved roads. Road racing is the most popular professional form of bicycle racing, in terms of numbers of competitors, events and spectators. The two most common competition formats are mass start events, where riders start simultaneously (though sometimes with a handicap) and race to a set finish point; and time trials, where individual riders or teams race a course alone against the clock. Stage races or "tours" take multiple days, and consist of several mass-start or time-trial stages ridden consecutively. Matt DeCanio (born April 5, 1977) is an American ex-professional racing cyclist. DeCanio is an outspoken critic of doping in the sport, and founded thStolen Undergroundanti-doping movement after voluntarily confessing to performance-enhancing drug use and serving a two-year ban for doping. DeCanio was sued in 2008 by convicted doper Kayle Leogrande for defamation, after publishing a recorded telephone call between himself and Suzanne Sonye, although the suit was thrown out by a judge in the Superior Court of California. In 2010 he was making a comeback to cycling, racing for French amateur team Olympique Cycliste Val d’Oise. In 2022 DeCanio wrote an autobiography detailing his entire racing career and the fallout of him calling out Lance Armstrong and others for doping, long before Armstrong admitted it. Ciarán Power
Ciarán Power (born 8 May 1976 in Waterford, Ireland) is a former professional racing cyclist, the first Irish cyclist to ride in a major tour since Stephen Roche in 1993. He is a member of the Irish Pezula Racing Team. Power turned professional in 2000 with Linda McCartney Racing Team and rode the 2000 Giro d'Italia, gaining 2 top ten stage finishes. When the McCartney team folded in 2001, Power joined the French St Quentin team before moving to the US the following season and joining Navigators. After placing 3rd in the 1999 World 'B' road championship, Power came 74th in the 2000 Summer Olympics road race. In the 2004 Summer Olympics road race, he finished 13th, the highest placing by an Irish cyclist. He retired from professional racing at the end of the 2008 season. David McKenzie (born 6 August 1974) is an Australian former racing cyclist. He won the Australian national road race title in 1998. McKenzie's biggest victory came on stage 7 of the 2000 Giro d'Italia where he rode to victory after a 164 km solo breakaway. McKenzie won the Goulburn to Sydney Classic in 2005. He now works as a cycling journalist and commentator for Australian broadcaster SBS. Charles "Charly" Wegelius (born 26 April 1978 in Espoo, Finland) is a British former professional road bicycle racing, road racing cyclist. Never a winner of a professional race individually, Wegelius nevertheless made a career out of being a reliable and strong domestique, most notably in the mountains. Sir Bradley Marc Wiggins, CBE (born 28 April 1980) is a British former professional road and track racing cyclist, who competed professionally between 2001 and 2016. Matthew Stephens (born 4 January 1970) is a British former professional road racing cyclist, who rode as a professional between 1998 and 2011. Biography As a junior rider, Stephens won the Junior Tour of Wales in both 1987 and 1988, one of only two riders to win the race twice. He represented Great Britain at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, finishing 61st in the road race. Stephens finished 8th in the Amateur World Road Race Championships in 1995, forming part of a break on the second lap of the race alongside eventual winner Danny Nelissen and earning Team GB their squad for the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 (automatic qualification for the Games was restricted to nations with finishers in the top 15 of the 1995 World Championships). Maximilian Sciandri (born 15 February 1967) is a retired British road racing cyclist of Italian descent. He competed as an Italian national up to February 1995, then took British citizenship. He won the bronze medal in the men's individual road race at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, USA. He was a professional rider from 1989 to 2004. Sciandri subsequently worked for the as a Directeur sportif from 2011 to 2018, having previously ridden for team manager Jim Ochowicz at the Motorola team in the 1990s. Prior to joining BMC he worked with British Cycling, helping to establish their base in Quarrata, and developing riders such as Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas.
