Lester Oliver Bankhead
Lester Oliver Bankhead (1912–1997), was an American architect, known for his modernist church designs. In the 1950s, he was a pioneering Black architect in Los Angeles, California. His architecture firm went by the names Bankhead's Building Design Services, and later as Lester O. Bankhead Design Group. Early life Lester Oliver Bankhead was born on April 20, 1912, in Union, South Carolina. He was born to parents Pearl Eugenia Eskew and John Hayes Bankhead, and was the eldest of six children. His mother was a teacher and had attended Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University); his father was a farmer and a minister. His early education was in a one-room Rosenwald School where his mother taught in Cherokee County, South Carolina. He may have also attended Sims High School in Union. The city of Union is the county seat of Union County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 8,393 at the 2010 census. James Homer Garrott
James Homer Garrott Jr. (1897–1991), was an American architect active in the Los Angeles area in the mid-20th century. He designed more than 200 buildings, including twenty-five churches and several public buildings. He has been described as a "pivotal black avant garde modernist of the 1940s era." Biography James Homer Garrott Jr. was born on June 19, 1897, in Montgomery, Alabama. Garrott graduated from Los Angeles Polytechnic High School in 1917. He earned his architect's license in 1928. Wesley Howard Henderson (born 1951), is an American architect, educator, and historian. He is an assistant professor at the Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science at Tuskegee University, and is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA). Particularly notable is Henderson's dissertation on Paul Revere Williams, celebrated as the most in-depth examination of the career of Williams, a prominent and celebrated African American architect. Paul Revere Williams, FAIA (February 18, 1894 – January 23, 1980) was an American architect based in Los Angeles, California.
