Lès
The word ''lès'' (, and with liaison) is an archaic French preposition meaning "near", "next to". Today it occurs only in place names to distinguish places with the same name. The word ''lès'' has two variants: ''lez'' and ''les''. The latter should not be confused with the plural definite article ''les'' (e.g. ''les-Bains'', "the Baths"). Etymology The word ''lès'' and its variants derive from late Latin ''latus'', "side". The preposition is not used anymore in French, but remains still nowadays in other Langues d'oïl such as the Walloon language with ''dilé'' (close to) and ''adlé'' (among). Examples Lès * Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, near Avignon * Beaumont-lès-Valence, near Valence * Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse, near Chevreuse * Margny-lès-Compiègne, near Compiègne * Asnières-lès-Dijon, near Dijon * Fontaine-lès-Dijon, near Dijon * Hauteville-lès-Dijon, near Dijon * Neuilly-lès-Dijon, near Dijon * Perrigny-lès-Dijon, near Dijon * Pl ...

Life Extension Society
The Life Extension Society (LES) with its network of coordinators was the first cryonics organization in the world. It was founded by Evan Cooper in 1964 to promote cryonic suspension of people, and became the seed tree for cryonics societies throughout the US where local cryonics advocates would meet as a result of contact through the LES mailing list. The original LES ceased existence near the end of the 1960s, but an organization with the same name and similar objectives was incorporated in Maryland in 1992. History In 1962, Cooper privately published a manuscript named ''Immortality: Physically, Scientifically, Now'' under his pseudonym, Nathan Duhring. The book is considered by Michael Darwin "a modest, almost apologetic one; the ideas it contains are the stuff of genius and the fabric of change, in it, he advocated that men need not be born only to die and that if they were frozen at or near the time of death they might yet have a chance to live again, whole and complete, ...

Les (Vietnam)
''Les'' is a derogatory local Vietnamese term of identification for more globally common labels like lesbian, queer woman, or female homosexual. It is derived mainly from scholarship by Vietnamese-American ethnographer Natalie Newton, who is, at present, the only Western scholar to have centred Vietnam's ''les'' as her subject of investigation. Her articles have been frequently cited as reference or point of entry to issues concerning Vietnamese queer communities. As a research topic, Vietnamese homosexualities have only recently garnered scholarly interest. A large majority of scholarship has been produced in the 2010s, not allowing much time for significant historical evolution or reinterpretations. Hence, besides Newton and a handful of other academics, scholarship on homosexuality and LGBT issues in Vietnam is limited. Consequently, research on the demographic subset of Vietnam's ''les'' is even rarer. However, the relative lack of sources might in fact productively and ap ...

For United States Coast Guard personnel LES can be retrieved by the member from an online system called Direct Access that is controlled by U.S. Coast Guard Personnel Services Command. It lays out the system of Classified information, classification, declassification, and handling of national security information generated by the U.S. government and its employees and contractors, as well as information received from other governments. The desired degree of secrecy about such information is known as its Information sensitivity, sensitivity. Sensitivity is based upon a calculation of the damage to national security that the release of the information would cause. Large Eddy Simulation
Large eddy simulation (LES) is a mathematical model for turbulence used in computational fluid dynamics. It was initially proposed in 1963 by Joseph Smagorinsky to simulate atmospheric air currents, and first explored by Deardorff (1970). LES is currently applied in a wide variety of engineering applications, including combustion, acoustics, and simulations of the atmospheric boundary layer. The simulation of turbulent flows by numerically solving the Navier–Stokes equations requires resolving a very wide range of time and length scales, all of which affect the flow field. Such a resolution can be achieved with direct numerical simulation (DNS), but DNS is computationally expensive, and its cost prohibits simulation of practical engineering systems with complex geometry or flow configurations, such as turbulent jets, pumps, vehicles, and landing gear. The principal idea behind LES is to reduce the computational cost by ignoring the smallest length scales, which are the most c ...

Lake-effect Snow
Lake-effect snow is produced during cooler atmospheric conditions when a cold air mass moves across long expanses of warmer lake water. The lower layer of air, heated by the lake water, picks up water vapor from the lake and rises through colder air. The vapor then freezes and is deposited on the leeward (downwind) shores. The same effect also occurs over bodies of saline water, when it is termed ocean-effect or bay-effect snow. The effect is enhanced when the moving air mass is uplifted by the orographic lift, orographic influence of higher elevations on the downwind shores. This uplifting can produce narrow but very intense bands of precipitation, which deposit at a rate of many inches of snow each hour, often resulting in a large amount of total snowfall. The areas affected by lake-effect and parallel "ocean-effect" phenomena are called snowbelts. These include areas east of the Great Lakes in North America, the west coasts of northern Japan, Lake Baikal in Russia, and areas ...

Background On September 6, 2011, Glover signed with Glassnote. The founder Daniel Glass says "There's a tremendous sense of rock'n'roll about him, an irreverence and an authenticity, He fits in with our roster because he's alternative. He liked our approach, which is very touring-intensive. Secondly, it's about how progressive he's been online: inclusive of his fans and very liberal with giving away music. He know ...
