The word ''lès'' (, and with liaison) is an archaic French preposition meaning "near", "next to". Today it occurs only in place names to distinguish places with the same name. The word ''lès'' has two variants: ''lez'' and ''les''. The latter should not be confused with the plural definite article ''les'' (e.g. ''les-Bains'', "the Baths"). Etymology The word ''lès'' and its variants derive from late Latin ''latus'', "side". The preposition is not used anymore in French, but remains still nowadays in other Langues d'oïl such as the Walloon language with ''dilé'' (close to) and ''adlé'' (among). Life Extension Society
The Life Extension Society (LES) with its network of coordinators was the first cryonics organization in the world. It was founded by Evan Cooper in 1964 to promote cryonic suspension of people, and became the seed tree for cryonics societies throughout the US where local cryonics advocates would meet as a result of contact through the LES mailing list. The original LES ceased existence near the end of the 1960s, but an organization with the same name and similar objectives was incorporated in Maryland in 1992. ''Les'' is a derogatory local Vietnamese term of identification for more globally common labels like lesbian, queer woman, or female homosexual. It is derived mainly from scholarship by Vietnamese-American ethnographer Natalie Newton, who is, at present, the only Western scholar to have centred Vietnam's ''les'' as her subject of investigation. Her articles have been frequently cited as reference or point of entry to issues concerning Vietnamese queer communities. As a research topic, Vietnamese homosexualities have only recently garnered scholarly interest. Large eddy simulation (LES) is a mathematical model for turbulence used in computational fluid dynamics. It was initially proposed in 1963 by Joseph Smagorinsky to simulate atmospheric air currents, and first explored by Deardorff (1970). LES is currently applied in a wide variety of engineering applications, including combustion, acoustics, and simulations of the atmospheric boundary layer. Lake-effect Snow
Lake-effect snow is produced during cooler atmospheric conditions when a cold air mass moves across long expanses of warmer lake water. The lower layer of air, heated by the lake water, picks up water vapor from the lake and rises through colder air. The vapor then freezes and is deposited on the leeward (downwind) shores. The same effect also occurs over bodies of saline water, when it is termed ocean-effect or bay-effect snow. The effect is enhanced when the moving air mass is uplifted by the orographic lift, orographic influence of higher elevations on the downwind shores. This uplifting can produce narrow but very intense bands of precipitation, which deposit at a rate of many inches of snow each hour, often resulting in a large amount of total snowfall.
