Leo Depagadogi Keke (10 August 19478 November 2012) was a Nauruan lawyer and politician. Keke was the first Nauruan lawyer. He served as an MP from 1976 to 1980. He was minister of justice from 1979 to 1980. Biography Leo Keke was born on 10 August 1947, in the Yaren District of Nauru. He was the brother of Ludwig Keke, Nauru's first university graduate. Leo Keke first graduated from St. Joseph's College, and then went on to graduate with a law degree from the University of Tasmania in 1972. By 1974, Keke was admitted as a barrister and solicitor by the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory. He was the first Nauruan lawyer. He was ultimately admitted to practice law in the Supreme Court of Nauru as well as the High Court of Australia. He practiced law with Blake & Riggall in Melbourne as a solicitor. By-elections are held for the Parliament of Nauru to fill vacancies that occur between general elections. Previously, Nauruan general elections and by-elections used different voting systems. Nauru uses the unique Dowdall system for general elections, but for by-elections it used a more conventional preferential system. Candidates had to receive an absolute majority of first preference votes. If none did, then the candidate with the fewest first preference votes was eliminated, and the next preference votes on their ballots were distributed to the remaining candidates. This cycle continued until one candidate had an absolute majority of votes. 2003 Nauruan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on 3 May 2003 to elect members of the Parliament of Nauru. The election took place with Nauru having economic difficulties and a large budget deficit. This was the main issue in the election, which followed a period where a number of presidents had been elected for short periods of time. However the election resulted in deadlock for several weeks afterwards, with parliament divided between three candidates for president. It was only at the end of May that Ludwig Scotty was elected as the new president of Nauru and was able to form a new government. Hammer DeRoburt (25 September 1922 – 15 July 1992) was a Nauruan politician and independence leader. He led negotiations for independence from Australia and the end of the country's status as a United Nations trust territory. He was subsequently elected as the inaugural president of Nauru, serving four terms in office (1968–1976, 1978–1986, 1986, 1986–1989). Prior to independence he was head chief of Nauru and chair of the Nauru Local Government Council. Early life DeRoburt was born in Nauru on 25 September 1922. He was the son of DeRoburt and Eidumunang; his maternal grandfather Daimon was the island's head chief from 1920 to 1930. Bernard Annen Auwen Dowiyogo (14 February 1946 – 9 March 2003) was a Nauruan politician who served as President of Nauru on seven separate occasions. David Peter Gadaraoa is a Nauruan politician. Biography In 1967, Gadaraoa was elected to serve on the Nauruan Constitutional Convention. Gadaraoa was elected to the Parliament of Nauru representing the Anabar Constituency in the 1968 election. He was re-elected unopposed in 1971. He was again re-elected in 1973.
