David Peter Gadaraoa
David Peter Gadaraoa is a Nauruan politician. Biography In 1967, Gadaraoa was elected to serve on the Nauruan Constitutional Convention. Gadaraoa was elected to the Parliament of Nauru representing the Anabar Constituency in the 1968 election. He was re-elected unopposed in 1971. He was again re-elected in 1973. In December 1973, Gadaraoa was elected deputy speaker under Speaker Kenas Aroi. Gadaraoa defeated Lagumot Harris by one vote. Gadaraoa was re-elected in 1976. Gadaraoa was elected speaker of Parliament in January 1977 following the resignation of Speaker Edwin Tsitsi in December 1976. Gadaraoa was re-elected to parliament in 1977. He was re-elected as speaker in November. He was again re-elected unopposed to parliament in 1980. He was re-elected as speaker as well. Gadaraoa resigned his parliamentary seat in September 1981 for personal reasons. Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on 24 April 2010, following the dissolution of parliament by President Marcus Stephen on 16 March 2010. The election was called due to repeated attempts to oust the government of Marcus Stephen in votes of no-confidence. There were 86 candidates, eight of them women. Background: the 'Getax affair' Australian officials have accused the Australian company Getax, which is an important buyer of Nauruan phosphate, of having precipitated the election by destabilising the Stephen government. Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on April 26, 2008, following the dissolving of Parliament by President Marcus Stephen on April 18. The decision came after what Stephen referred to as "months of political deadlock". Of the parliament's eighteen members, nine supported the Stephen government and nine were in opposition. Events leading to election The deadlock had been exacerbated by a crisis between the President and the Speaker of Parliament, Opposition member David Adeang. On March 22, Adeang had called a Parliamentary session, allegedly without informing government ministers, who therefore did not attend. Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on 25 August 2007. There were more than 80 candidates for the 18 seats available. Fifteen MPs were reelected, among them fourteen supporters of Ludwig Scotty's government; the only opposition politician to be reelected was René Harris. Of the three seats which changed hands, two were losses for the opposition and one was a gain. Following the elections, there were fifteen pro-government members and three opposition members. This was the main issue in the election, which followed a period where a number of presidents had been elected for short periods of time.
