The Leipzig Kings are an American football team in Leipzig, Germany, that plays in the European League of Football (ELF). History The Leipzig franchise was announced along with Berlin Thunder and Cologne Centurions in March 2021, as part of the inaugural season of the European League of Football. In April, ELF commissioner Patrick Esume praised the potential of Leipzig for growing the sport and the athletes in the university, despite the relatively short time for the Kings to prepare for the first season. The Kings introduced their first head coach, Fred Armstrong, who previously coached the national teams of Sweden, the Czech Republic and Austria, and also gained coaching experience with Stuttgart Scorpions and two NFL teams, New York Jets and New York Giants. On May 7, 2021, the Kings signed Japanese wide receiver Yoshihito Omi who would be the first Asian player playing in ELF. 2022 Leipzig Kings Season
The 2022 Leipzig Kings season in the European League of Football is the second season in the Leipzig Kings history. Preseason The franchise began late in the preseason with player signings. The first one was the signing of former Kings running backs coach David McCants and one day later European veteran A.J. Wentland. Leipzig starting quarterback Michael Birdsong announced on March 21, 2022 that he will retire from his professional football career. His replacement for the 2022 season is Jordan Barlow, who was the starting quarterback for the Southwestern Assemblies of God University and won the Victory Bowl in 2021 as well as being named the offensive MVP of the championship game. Like Birdsong previously, he signed a two-year-deal with the Kings. Due to noise emissions in the Alfred-Kunze-Sportpark the team couldn't come to terms with the city for a new lease agreement. Alfred-Kunze-Sportpark is a multi-use stadium in Leipzig, Germany. It is used as the stadium of BSG Chemie Leipzig (1997), BSG Chemie Leipzig matches. The capacity of the stadium is 4,999 spectators. For the 2021 ELF season, inaugural season of the new European League of Football the Leipzig Kings played their home games at the stadium. The X-League () is the top-level Gridiron football league in Japan. It was founded in 1971 as the Japan American Football League, and changed its name to the X League in 1997. There are four divisions (X1 Super, X1 Area, X2, and X3) among which there is promotion and relegation. Teams are split into different divisions or blocks, depending on the tier.
