Leh–Manali Highway
The Leh–Manali Highway is a long highway in northernmost India connecting Leh, the capital of the Union Territory of Ladakh, to Manali in the state of Himachal Pradesh, and forms part of NH3. It crosses four passes: Rohtang La, Baralacha La, Lungalacha Ka, Tanglang La. It connects the Kullu Valley of the upper Beas river to the Chandra and Bhaga river valleys of Lahaul via the Atal tunnel in Himachal Pradesh, then crosses over a series of high Himalayan passes into the Indus river valley in Ladakh. It is usually open for about six months a year from the first week of May when the snow is cleared from the highway to October when snowfall again blocks the high passes on the highway. Taglang La
Taglang La or Tanglang La, elevation , is a high altitude mountain pass in Leh district in the Indian union territory of Ladakh. It is located on the NH3 Leh–Manali Highway. Rail-cum-road tunnels are being constructed under the Taglang La, Lungalacha La (87 km south of Taglang La) and Bara-lacha la (171 km south of Taglang La) to cater for the traffic from existing NH3 & under-construction Bhanupli–Leh line. The elevation in metres on the local signboard is in agreement with SRTM data, however the claim of being world's second highest motorable pass is no longer accurate after construction of several other higher motorable passes and it was the 12th highest motorable pass in 2015. Rain Shadow
A rain shadow is an area of significantly reduced rainfall behind a mountainous region, on the side facing away from prevailing winds, known as its leeward side. Evaporated moisture from body of water, bodies of water (such as oceans and large lakes) is carried by the prevailing sea breeze, onshore breezes towards the drier and hotter inland areas. When encountering elevated landforms, the moist air is orographic lift, driven upslope towards the summit, peak, where it expands, cools, and its moisture condenses and starts to Precipitation, precipitate. If the landforms are tall and wide enough, most of the humidity will be lost to precipitation over the windward side (also known as the ''rainward'' side) before ever making it past the top. Border Roads Organisation
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is a statutory body under the ownership of the Ministry of Defence of the Government of India. BRO develops and maintains road networks in India's border areas and friendly neighboring countries. This includes infrastructure operations in 19 states and three union territories (including Andaman and Nicobar Islands) and neighboring countries such as Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, Tajikistan and Sri Lanka. Zanskar
Zanskar, Zahar (locally) or Zangskar, is the southwestern region of Kargil district in the Indian union territory of Ladakh. The administrative centre of Zanskar is Padum. Zanskar, together with the rest of Ladakh, was briefly a part of the kingdom of Geography of Tibet, Western Tibet called Ngari Khorsum. Zanskar lies 250 km south of Kargil, Kargil City on National Highway 301 (India), NH301. Shingo La
Shinku La (or Shingo La) mountain pass on Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road strategic road on the state boundary between Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, connects the Zanskar region of Ladakh with the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh. The under-construction Shingo La Tunnel, with target expected completion date of 2028, will reduce the Manali to Kargil distance by 522 km while providing an additional all-weather route to Ladakh as an alternative to the existing Leh–Manali Highway.
