Leer, Lower Saxony
Leer () is a town in the district of Leer (district), Leer, in the northwestern part of Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the river Leda, a tributary of the river Ems (river), Ems, near the border with the Netherlands. With 34,958 inhabitants (2021), it is the third-largest city in East Frisia after Emden and Aurich. It has a railway and autobahn connection to Groningen (city), Groningen, Netherlands, Emden, Bremen and the South (Rheine and the Ruhr industrial region). Geography Leer had been a settlement long before it was first mentioned in written documents. Leer is a districts of Germany, district (''Landkreis'') in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is bounded by (from the northwest and clockwise) the city of Emden, the districts of Aurich (district), Aurich, Wittmund (district), Wittmund, Friesland (district), Friesland, Ammerland, Cloppenburg (district), Cloppenburg and Emsland, and by the Netherlands (Groningen (province), Province of Groningen). History In 1744, East Frisia was annexed by Prussia. In 1867, the region was subdivided into districts, and the districts of Leer and Weener were established. In 1932, these two districts were merged. Geography The District is located in the southern part of East Frisia. The Ems (river), Ems River runs through the District, coming out of the Emsland in the south and flowing into the Dollart, a bay of the North Sea. Leer, South Sudan
Leer (or Ler) is a town in the Leer County of Unity State in the Greater Upper Nile region of South Sudan. It is the capital of Leer County and was the capital of the former Southern Liech State. It is the most densely populated county in South Sudan. Location Leer is in Dok Nuer territory. It is located in Block 5A, an important oil-producing area in the north of South Sudan. Leer is a 1.5-hour flight from Juba or a two-day bus drive from Juba, the capital of South Sudan. The roads are not usable in the rainy season, when the only means of travel is by boat on the River Nile. There are no commercial flights to Leer, only aircraft contracted by the World Food Programme or missionary organizations like the Mission Aviation Fellowship fly in to support the work of humanitarian workers and to develop the Christian church which is growing rapidly. Leer County
Leer County is an administrative division of Unity State in the Greater Upper Nile region of South Sudan. The headquarters is in the town of Leer. In December 2009, traffic police established roadblocks along the road between Panyijar County and Leer and demanded high bribes from travelers who wanted to pass. In March 2011 the Governor of Unity State, Taban Deng Gai, launched a drive to recruit men for the army. In April, Leer County police were reportedly enrolling young men into the Sudan People's Liberation Army by force, apparently on orders from the County Commissioner, who was in turn obeying the Governor's orders.
