Leer County
Leer County is an administrative division of Unity State in the Greater Upper Nile region of South Sudan. The headquarters is in the town of Leer. In December 2009, traffic police established roadblocks along the road between Panyijar County and Leer and demanded high bribes from travelers who wanted to pass. In March 2011 the Governor of Unity State, Taban Deng Gai, launched a drive to recruit men for the army. In April, Leer County police were reportedly enrolling young men into the Sudan People's Liberation Army by force, apparently on orders from the County Commissioner, who was in turn obeying the Governor's orders. Greater Upper Nile
The Greater Upper Nile () is a region of northeastern South Sudan. It is named for the White Nile (it is its lowest portion in South Sudan), a tributary of the Nile River in North Africa, North and East Africa, East Africa. Unity (state)
Unity State, also known as Western Upper Nile, is a state in South Sudan. Unity State is in the Greater Upper Nile region. Unity is inhabited predominantly by two ethnic groups: the Nuer majority, and the Dinka minority. In 2015, a presidential decree established a new system of 28 states, replacing the previously established 10. Unity State was replaced by the states of Ruweng, Northern Liech and Southern Liech. Unity State was re-established by a peace agreement signed on 22 February 2020 with smaller boundaries as the northern part of the former state became the Ruweng Administrative Area. South Sudan (), officially the Republic of South Sudan, is a landlocked country in East Africa. Leer, South Sudan
Leer (or Ler) is a town in the Leer County of Unity State in the Greater Upper Nile region of South Sudan. It is the capital of Leer County and was the capital of the former Southern Liech State. It is the most densely populated county in South Sudan. Location Leer is in Dok Nuer territory. It is located in Block 5A, an important oil-producing area in the north of South Sudan. Leer is a 1.5-hour flight from Juba or a two-day bus drive from Juba, the capital of South Sudan. The roads are not usable in the rainy season, when the only means of travel is by boat on the River Nile. There are no commercial flights to Leer, only aircraft contracted by the World Food Programme or missionary organizations like the Mission Aviation Fellowship fly in to support the work of humanitarian workers and to develop the Christian church which is growing rapidly. Panyijar County
Panyijar County is an administrative division of Unity State in the Greater Upper Nile region of South Sudan. Panyijar County was "once a thriving agricultural area before decades of war forced inhabitants to migrate elsewhere." "The United Nations says that up to 40,000 people are displaced to islands in the Bahr el Jebel River and surrounding wetlands in Unity State’s Panyijar County. Payinjiar County is the southernmost in Unity State and was the last place of refuge for thousands of people who fled southward during government offensives into Unity State from the northwest in January and February. Taban Deng Gai
Taban Deng Gai is a South Sudanese politician who has been one of the Vice Presidents of South Sudan in the unity government since February 2020. He served as the First Vice President of South Sudan from 23 July 2016 to February 2020. He was mining minister before being appointed as acting first vice president. Biography Born around 1950 in the village of Kerial in what is today Unity State, Deng is an ethnic Nuer. He self-identifies as member of the Jikany subgroup of the Nuer, even though his home village was a Leek Nuer settlement. According to journalist Fred Oluoch, he is also of partial Arab descent. Taban Deng Gai is closely connected to the family of Riek Machar, being the latter's brother-in-law as well as the cousin of Machar's wife Angelina Teny. Sudan People's Liberation Army
The South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF), formerly the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), is the military force of South Sudan. The SPLA was founded as a guerrilla movement against the government of Sudan in 1983 and was a key participant of the Second Sudanese Civil War and the subsequent independence of South Sudan. It was led by John Garang, who died in 2005 and was succeeded by Salva Kiir. As of 2010, the SPLA was divided into divisions of 10,000–14,000 soldiers. Bentiu
Bentiu, also spelled Bantiu, is a city in South Sudan. It is the capital of Unity State. Location Bentiu is located in Rubkona County, Unity State, in the Greater Upper Nile region of South Sudan, near the international border with the Republic of the Sudan. It lies approximately 654 kilometers (406 miles), by road, northwest of Juba, the capital and largest city in the country. Bentiu sits on the southern bank of the Bahr el Ghazal River that separates it from the town of Rubkona, which sits on the river's northern bank. The two towns are joined by the ''El Salaam Bridge'' that spans the river. This bridge, along with a market, was bombed and partially damaged by North Sudanese MiG-29 bomber airplanes on April 23, 2012, during the Heglig Crisis.
