Lebanese Renewal Party
Lebanese Renewal Party (in Arabic حزب التجدد اللبناني) abbreviated as LRP was a Lebanese nationalist party established in 1972 by a number of staunch Lebanese nationalists including activist Etienne Saqr, poet Said Akl and writer May Murr. Its ideology was based on Phoenicianism and that the Lebanese nation is an independent non-Arab entity and is not part of the Arab World. It also warned against pan-Arabism, leftist ideology and the Palestinian military presence in Lebanon. Etienne Saqr
Étienne Saqr ( ar, إتيان صقر; born on 26 December 1937; last name also spelt Sakr), also known by his kunya "''Abu Arz''” (), is a Lebanese nationalist leader and founder of the Guardians of the Cedars militia and political party (, ''Ḥurrās al-ʿArz'' in Arabic). Saqr and his militia participated in the Lebanese Civil War in the 1970s and 1980s, and remained militantly active until he was expelled from the country with the flight of the South Lebanon Army, of which he was not a member, in May 2000. Early life and education Saqr was born in Ain Ebel in 1937 into Maronite family, one of eleven children, of whom eight were boys and three were girls. His father was a school principal. Saqr was educated in French schools in Tripoli and Beirut. Phoenicianism
Phoenicianism is a form of Lebanese nationalism adopted by many Lebanese people, at the time of the creation of Greater Lebanon. It constitutes identification of the Lebanese people with the ancient Phoenicians. Position Proponents claim that the land of Lebanon has been inhabited uninterruptedly since Phoenician times, and that the current population descends from the original population, with some admixture due to immigration over the centuries. They argue that Arabization merely represented a shift to the Arabic language as the vernacular of the Lebanese people, and that, according to them, no actual shift of ethnic identity, much less ancestral origins, occurred. Guardians Of The Cedars
The Guardians of the Cedars (GoC) ( ar, حراس الأرز; ''Ḥurrās al-Arz''; French: ''Gardiens du Cedre'' or ''Gardiens des Cèdres'', GdC) are a far-right ultranationalist Lebanese party and former militia in Lebanon. It was formed by Étienne Saqr (also known with the kunya or ''nom de guerre'' "Abu Arz" or "Father of the Cedars") and others along with the Lebanese Renewal Party in the early 1970s.
