Laurence J. Burton
Laurence Junior Burton (October 30, 1926 – November 27, 2002) was a U.S. Representative from Utah. Born in Ogden, Utah, Burton graduated from Ogden High School in 1944. Enlisted in the United States Navy Air Corps and served from January 1945 to July 1946. He graduated from Weber College at Ogden, in 1948, from the University of Utah in 1951, and from Utah State University at Logan in 1956. Took postgraduate work at Georgetown and George Washington University, Washington, D.C., in 1957 and 1958. Public relations director and athletic manager at Weber College from 1948 to 1956. Regional director for American College Public Relations Association in 1954 and 1955. He was editor of National Junior College Athletic Association magazine from 1951 to 1961. Henry Aldous Dixon (June 29, 1890 – January 22, 1967) was a U.S. Representative from Utah and the president of first Weber College and later Utah State Agricultural College. Biography Born in Provo in the Utah Territory, Dixon attended the public schools until high school, when he attended private Brigham Young High School, from which he graduated in 1909. He graduated from Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, in 1914, from the University of Chicago in 1917, and from the University of Southern California in 1937. Career Dixon was an instructor at Weber College, which later became Weber State University, from 1914 to 1918, and served as the college's president twice, in 1919–1920 and 1937–1953. Between these presidential terms, he served as superintendent of Provo city schools from 1920–1924 and again in 1932-1937. Orrin Grant Hatch (March 22, 1934 – April 23, 2022) was an American attorney and politician who served as a United States senator from Utah from 1977 to 2019. Hatch's 42-year Senate tenure made him the longest-serving Republican U.S. senator in history, though Chuck Grassley is expected to surpass him in 2023. Hatch chaired the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions from 1981 to 1987. He served as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1995 to 2001 and 2003 to 2005. On January 3, 2015, after the 114th United States Congress was sworn in, he became president pro tempore of the Senate. Classes Of United States Senators
The 100 seats in the United States Senate are divided into three classes for the purpose of determining which seats will be up for election in any two-year cycle, with only one class being up for election at a time. With senators being elected to fixed terms of six years, the classes allow about a third of the seats to be up for election in any presidential or midterm election year instead of having all 100 be up for election at the same time every six years. The seats are also divided in such a way that any given state's two senators are in different classes so that each seat's term ends in different years. Class 1and 2 consist of 33 seats each, while class3 consists of 34 seats. Elections for class1 seats took place most recently in 2018, class2 in 2020, and the elections for class3 seats in 2022.
