Latyan Dam
Latyan Dam (, also Romanized as ''Sadd-e Latyān'') is a buttress dam on the Jajrood River, located less than 25 km from Tehran in the south of city of Lavasan. It is one of the main sources of water for Tehran metropolitan region. It was constructed between 1963 and 1967. The first generator in the dam's 45 MW hydroelectric power station was commissioned on 17 March 1969, the second on 13 April 1987. Geology Jajrood River basin is located in the southern part of central Alborz mountain range, the rocks of which date from the Palaeozoic era up to the Quaternary period, as below: * Palaeozoic era: The dolomitic rocks, sandstone and limestone. Jajrood River
The Jajrud (Jājrūd) (Persian: جاجرود), also spelled as Jajrood, Djadjéroud or Djaderoud, is the largest river in Shemiranat County, Tehran province, Iran. Its' sources are actually three different massifs of Southern Alborz mountain range and it flows mostly southwards until it is drained into the endorheic Namak Lake. Jajrud drainage basin covers an area of 698 square kilometres. There are two dams on Jajrud, Latyan Dam on upstream and Mamloo Dam on downstream, which are the main source of drinking water and hydropower for citizens of east and southeast of Tehran. Buttress Dams
A buttress is an architectural structure built against or projecting from a wall which serves to support or reinforce the wall. Dams In Iran
Major dam construction started in Iran in the 1950s. Some fourteen large dams were built with the help of foreign engineers and advisors during two decades preceding the Islamic Revolution in 1979. In the post-revolution era, Iran's dam building capacity was significantly strengthened, with some 200 contracting companies, 70 consultant firms and 30 corporations as well as hundreds of hydroelectric manufacturing units having been established inside of Iran in less than three decades. In addition to the necessity of generating electricity, Iran needs dams to effectively control and manage a growing water shortage across the country.
