Latin American Literary Review Press
The Latin American Literary Review/Press, affiliated with the Department of Comparative Literature in Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, is a non-profit organization. The founding editor-in-chief was Yvette E. Miller.; she has been succeeded by Debra A. Castillo. Miller developed two entities: the ''Latin American Literary Review'', a literary magazine, and the Latin American Literary Review Press, which published English translations of Latin American literature. The ''Latin American Literary Review'' was established in 1972 and is published biannually. As of 2017 it has moved to an online platform with the Latin American Research Commons and Ubiquity Press. It contains feature essays, creative work, new translations of important texts, and reviews of recent literary works from Latin America. It publishes articles in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The Latin American Studies Association (LASA) is the largest association for scholars of Latin American studies. ''Yo-Yo Boing!'' (1998) is a postmodern novel in English, Spanish, and Spanglish by Puerto Rican author Giannina Braschi. The cross-genre work is a structural hybrid of poetry, political philosophy, musical, manifesto, treatise, memoir, and drama. The work addresses tensions between Anglo-American and Hispanic-American cultures in the United States. Bilingual Review Press is an American publishing house specialising in the publication of scholarly and literary works by Hispanic and Latino American authors and researchers. It was founded in 1973 as the publisher of '' The Bilingual Review/La revista bilingüe'', a new academic and literary journal with a focus on Spanish-English bilingualism, bilingual studies and Hispanic literature that was first issued in 1974. Mercedes Valdivieso
Mercedes Valdivieso (March 1, 1924 – August 3, 1993) was a Chilean writer, known since her earliest writings for the subversive nature of her texts. She was born in Santiago, Chile. She first wrote ''La Brecha'' (''Breakthrough'') in 1961, which is considered to be a landmark feminist Latin-American novel. This novel caused dismay from the reactionary segment of society and loud applause from the critics and is considered a revolutionary departure from the traditional treatment of the feminine role in marriage. ''Breakthrough'' is a novel that ends with the heroine's awareness that she didn't really need to depend upon a man in order to lead a fulfilling life. Ana María Shua (born 1951) is an Argentine writer. She is particularly well known for her work in microfiction. Shua has published over eighty books in numerous genres including novels, short stories, microfiction, poetry, drama, children's literature, books of humor and Jewish folklore, anthologies, film scripts, journalistic articles, and essays. She has received numerous national and international awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, and is one of Argentina's premier living writers. Benito Pérez Galdós
Benito Pérez Galdós (May 10, 1843 – January 4, 1920) was a Spanish realist novelist. He was the leading literary figure in 19th-century Spain, and some scholars consider him second only to Miguel de Cervantes in stature as a Spanish novelist. Pérez Galdós was a prolific writer, publishing 31 novels, 46 ''Episodios Nacionales'' (''National Episodes''), 23 plays, and the equivalent of 20 volumes of shorter fiction, journalism and other writings. ''Nazarín'' (, ) is a 1959 Mexican satirical drama film directed by Luis Buñuel and co-written between Buñuel and Julio Alejandro, adapted from the eponymous novel of Benito Pérez Galdós. The film received the international prize at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival and was selected as the Mexican entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 32nd Academy Awards, but was not selected as a nominee. Edmundo Desnoes (Havana, Cuba, 1930), is a Cuban writer author of the novel ''Memorias del subdesarrollo'' (''Memories of Underdevelopment''), a complex story depicting the alienation of a Cuban bourgeois intellectual struggling to adapt to the process of the Revolution staying on the island after his family decides to leave the country. He originally called the work ''Inconsolable Memories'' in the first English edition.
