Laholm () is a town and the seat of Laholm Municipality, Halland County, Sweden, with 6,527 inhabitants in 2015. Laholm is, despite its small population, for historical reasons often still referred to as a ''city''. In the 13th century, Laholm was the first in Halland to receive city rights. The town is located at the estuary of the river Lagan in the Bay of Laholm. History Laholm is one of Sweden's oldest cities and the oldest in the province of Halland. The Amalgamation (politics), amalgamation process during the local government reform in the 1970s took place in two steps. Halland County (, ) is a county ('' län'') on the western coast of Sweden. It corresponds roughly to the cultural and historical province of Halland. The capital is Halmstad. Lagan River (Sweden)
The Lagan is one of four main westcoast rivers in south-western Sweden besides Göta älv. It is 244 kilometers and is one of the longest rivers in southern Sweden. It starts in Tahesjön near Taberg in the municipality of Jönköping, flows through Vaggeryd, Värnamo and Ljungby and ends in the town of Mellbystrand in the municipality of Laholm. More specifically, it ends in the Bay of Laholm, a part of the strait of Kattegat. People have been following the river from the coastal areas since the Viking Age and settling in its vicinity. Halland
