Laguna Del Sauce
Laguna del Sauce (Lagoon of the Willow) is a subtropical shallow lake and the largest water body in the Maldonado Department of Uruguay. It is located west of Punta del Este. The lake is the only freshwater ecosystem in the country classified for drinking water as its principal use. Originally a coastal lagoon, the lake was damned for military purposes in 1947. The closed ecosystem makes the lake prone to eutrophication, and has had regular algae blooms—one of which, in 2015, included cyanobacteria that disrupted water supplies. Geography The lagoon covers and is long and wide. The maximum depth of the lake is five meters. The lake is part of an interconnected lake system which includes Laguna de los Cisnes (205 ha) and Laguna del Potrero (411 ha). The Maldonado Department (; ), with an area of and 212,951 inhabitants (2023), is located to the southeast of Uruguay. Its capital is Maldonado, Uruguay, Maldonado. Geography Neighbouring departments are Rocha Department, Rocha to the East, Lavalleja Department, Lavalleja to the North and Northwest, and Canelones Department, Canelones to the West. The Río de la Plata (; ), also called the River Plate or La Plata River in English, is the estuary formed by the confluence of the Uruguay River and the Paraná River at Punta Gorda, Colonia, Punta Gorda. Arboretum Lussich
The Lussich Arboretum is an arboretum of located in the Maldonado Department of Uruguay near Punta del Este and Punta Ballena. History On 5 October 1896 Antonio Lussich bought a terrain of , which extend from "Arroyo el Potrero" to "Sierra de la Ballena" and from Rio de la Plata to Laguna del Sauce, land which at that time consisted only of sand dunes and stones. The next year ''Antonio Lussich'' started the forestry works which had as objective on one hand, to forest the dry lands in an attempt to stop the high winds that came from the ocean, and on the other, once the forest was established, to encourage birds to inhabit it. Windsurfing is a wind-propelled water sport that is a combination of sailing and surfing. It is also referred to as "sailboarding" and "boardsailing", and emerged in the late 1960s from the Californian aerospace and surf culture. Windsurfing gained a popular following across Europe and North America by the late 1970s and had achieved significant global popularity by the 1980s. Windsurfing became an Olympic sport in 1984. History Newman Darby of Pennsylvania created a rudderless "sailboard" in 1964 that incorporated a pivoting "square rigged" or "kite rigged" sail which allowed the rider to steer a rectangular board by tilting the sail forward and back.
