Malta was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 1972 with the song "", composed by Charles Camilleri, with lyrics by Albert Cassola, and performed by Helen and Joseph. The Maltese participating broadcaster, the Maltese Broadcasting Authority (MBA), selected its entry through a national final. Joe Cutajar won the national final with "" on 12 January 1972, and was joined by Helen Micallef for the Eurovision Song Contest 1972. Helen and Joseph was a Maltese singing duo consisting of Joe Cutajar and Helen Micallef, best known for their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 1972, held in Edinburgh, Scotland. The duo briefly reunited at the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in 2022, singing "L-imħabba" on the 50th anniversary of their participation. Charles Camilleri
Charles Camilleri (7 September 1931 – 3 January 2009) was a Maltese composer. Early life Camilleri was born in Ħamrun on 7 September 1931 to musical parents Carmel Camilleri and Josephine Quinton. He received initial piano tuition and grounding in the rudiments of music from his father, and also played the accordion. As a teenager, he composed many works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He studied under Joseph Abela Scolaro, Paul Nani and Carmelo Pace. In 1959, he studied under John Weinzweig at the University of Toronto for four years. Whilst in Toronto, he had contact with Stravinsky around the time of April 1962. Career Camilleri moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form "in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability". The Eurovision Song Contest 1972 was the 17th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom and was organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), who agreed to stage the event after the Monégasque broadcaster Télé Monte Carlo (TMC), who won in , was unable to meet the demands of hosting the event and could not find a suitable venue. Nazzareno Alessandro Micallef Garrett, better known by his stage name Renato Micallef (born 19 November 1951) is a Maltese pop singer. Renato has been active in the Maltese music scene since the age of 12. Renato has toured North America, Australia and the United Kingdom where his website claims he won an award for Singer Of The Year in 1980. In 1975, he represented Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing in 12th place with Singing This Song.
