''Kriegsmarine'' is a board wargame published by Simulations Canada (SimCan) in 1980 that is a simulation of tactical naval comabt in the Atlantic and Mediterranean during World War II. Description ''Kriegsmarine'' is a two-player naval wargame. The game includes seventeen scenarios based on historical encounters, which range from combat between two ships to fleet actions. The game has similar rules to SimCan's other naval games, allowing two or more games to be combined. A board wargame is a wargame with a set playing surface or board, as opposed to being played on a computer or in a more free-form playing area as in miniatures games. The modern, commercial wargaming hobby (as distinct from military exercises, or war games) developed in 1954 following the publication and commercial success of '' Tactics''.. Simulations Canada
Simulations Canada is the name of a Canadian board wargame publisher established in Nova Scotia in 1977. The company was founded by Stephen Newberg as a one-man operation and was one of only a handful of companies devoted to publishing wargames at that time. Other companies such as Avalon Hill and Simulations Publications, Inc. did not accept unsolicited submissions, resulting in the creation of the company. Stephen Newberg, with assistance from other designers and graphic artists, produced a relatively large output of games in the first years of the company, focusing on a wide mix of historical subjects not covered by other publishers. As the wargames industry grew, Simulations Canada made a number of text-only computer wargames that included a traditional board-game map and counters. A hex map, hex board, or hex grid is a game board design commonly used in wargames of all scales. The map is subdivided into a hexagonal tiling, small regular hexagons of identical size. Advantages and disadvantages The primary advantage of a hex map over a traditional square grid map is that the distance between the center of each and every pair of adjacent hex cells (or ''hex'') is the same. By comparison, in a square grid map, the distance from the center of each square cell to the center of the four diagonal adjacent cells it shares a corner with is times that of the distance to the center of the four adjacent cells it shares an edge with. This equidistant property of all adjacent hexes is desirable for games in which the measurement of movement is a factor. It is text-only, unusual for the time, and requires the player to track ship movement on a physical map. Gameplay ''Kriegsmarine'' is a game in which a World War II naval simulation is set in the Atlantic theatre of operations. The player is an operational level commander who receives reports and data and then issues commands. Unlike most videogames of the time that used a graphical display, ''Kriegsmarine'' is a text-only game, and the player is required to keep track of ship movements on a map using a grease pencil. ''Phoenix'' was a magazine primarily focussed on board wargames. It was published in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s by Simpubs Ltd., the British subsidiary of American game company Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI). History In 1974, SPI started to ship some of their wargames to J.D. Bardsley in the UK, who acted as a sales representative using the name SP/UK. Bardsley sold the games either via mail order or face to face at games conventions. Sales increased rapidly, and by March 1976, SP/UK had sold 25,000 units. ''The Wargamer'' was a magazine devoted to the hobby of board wargaming. Originally published as a British bimonthly magazine by UK Wargamers in 1977, it was subsequently published by World Wide Wargames, which then moved to the United States. The magazine ceased publication in 1990. History Keith Poulter, a political science teacher in England, became interested in board wargames in 1975, and decided to produce a wargaming magazine as a hobby. In 1977 he founded UK Wargamers (UKW) in order publish ''The Wargamer''. Like the American wargaming magazine '' Strategy & Tactics'' published by Simulations Publications Inc. ''Fire & Movement: The Forum of Conflict Simulation'' was a magazine devoted to wargames, both traditional board wargames and computer wargames. It was founded by Rodger MacGowan in 1975, and began publication the following year. In February 1982, Fire & Movement was acquired by Steve Jackson Games. In January 1985 the magazine was sold again to Diverse Talents Inc. (DTI). In 1988, World Wide Wargames (also known as 3W) acquired Diverse Talents Inc.
