Kresty-2 Prison
Federal State Institution Pre-trial Detention Facility No. 1 of the Federal Penitentiary Service for the City of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Oblast (), unofficially known as Kresty-2 () is a pretrial detention facility in Kolpino, Saint Petersburg. It was opened on December 22, 2017, and replaces the old Kresty Prison, from which it inherited its configuration, as well as its official and unofficial names. History In the 1990s, when the already old Kresty Prison was sometimes overcrowded two or three times more than normal, and its condition was already critical, many ideas about creating a new pretrial detention facility appeared in official and unofficial circles. The Federal Penitentiary Service (, FSIN) is a federal agency of the Ministry of Justice of Russia responsible for correctional services. The FSIN is the federal authority for the detention of suspected and convicted persons, the security and maintenance of prisons in Russia, the transport of prisoners, and rehabilitation programs. As of March 2022, it operates 872 institutions (204 pre-trial SIZO institutions, 642 corrective colonies, 8 prisons, 18 juvenile colonies), with pre-trial detention facilities housing adult and juvenile offenders of various security levels, with the majority of penal facilities being corrective labor colonies. Prisons in Russia consist of four types of facilities: pre-trial institutions; educative or juvenile colonies; corrective colonies; and prisons. A corrective colony is the most common, with 705 institutions (excluding 7 corrective colonies for convicts imprisoned for life) in 2019 across the administrative divisions of Russia.
