Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland (; fy, en Nijkrúslân), officially abbreviated as Kollumerland c.a., is a municipality in the northern Netherlands, located in the province of Friesland. In 2019 it merged with the municipalities of Dongeradeel and Ferwerderadiel to form the new municipality Noardeast-Fryslân. Population centres Augsbuurt, Burum, Kollum, Kollumerpomp, Kollumerzwaag, Munnekezijl, Oudwoude, Triemen, Veenklooster, Warfstermolen, Westergeest and Zwagerbosch. Kollum (Low Saxon: ''Kölm'') is a village in Noardeast-Fryslân municipality in the province Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 5529 in January 2017. There is a restored windmill, ''Tochmaland'' in the village. History The village was first mentioned between 822 and 825 as Colleheim, and means settlement of Kolle (person). Kollum originates from the early middle ages. During the 11th and 12th century, the peat was excavated in the region, and a settlement appeared on the Dwarsried, a former river leading to the Wadden Sea. During the 17th and 18th century, Kollum became a centre for trade and shipping. The tower church of the Dutch Reformed dates from the 13th century and was enlarged during the 15th century. Kollumersweach (Low Saxon: ''Kölmerswoag'') is a village in Noardeast-Fryslân in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 2,992 in January 2017. Before 2019, the village was part of the Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland municipality. History The village was first mentioned in 1444 as Zwaech, and means (cattle) pasture belonging to Kollum. Kollumersweach developed on a clay ridge from which the heath was cultivated during the 11th and 12th century. Westergeast (Low Saxon: ''Westergaist'') is a village in Noardeast-Fryslân in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It has a population of around 621 in January 2017. Before 2019, the village was part of the Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland municipality. History The village was first mentioned around 1333 as Ghaest. It is located on a slight hill ('' geast''). The village uses west to distinguish with . The Dutch Reformed church dates from 1200. In 1807, the tower was lowered. The church was restored between 1954 and 1957. Some of the stones from the tower were reused in a little ''woudhuisje'' (forest house) next to the church. The little house was demolished in 2018. In 1840, it was home to 263 people. Munnekezijl ( fry, Muntsjesyl; gos, Muntjesiel) is the easternmost village in Noardeast-Fryslân, Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of 488 in January 2017. Before 2019, the village was part of the Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland municipality. There is a windmill in the village, the Munnekezijlstermolen. History The village was first mentioned in 1510 as Monicken nyem szyl, and means "sluice of the monks" which is referenced to the monastery of Gerkesklooster who built a sluice at the location around 1450. In 1476, the sluice was damaged by the citizens of Achtkarspelen. In 1539, the sluice was moved further to the east, and in 1585, a sconce was built near the sluice. The current sluice dates from 1741. The Dutch Reformed church was built in 1899 to replace its 17th century predecessor. In 1840, Munnekezijl was home to 333 people. Feankleaster is a small village in Noardeast-Fryslân municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands, with a population of around 97 in January 2017. Before 2019, the village was part of the Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland municipality. History The village was first mentioned in 1446 as "da conuent to Faen", and means monastery on the moorland. Feankleaster started as a peat excavation settlement in the 11th or 12th century and developed along the intersection of the road from Kollum to Kollumersweach and Twijzel. Before 1287, the monastery Olijfberg was founded on the ''brink'' (communal pasture) in the village as an outpost of the Premonstratensian monastery of Aldwâld. Noardeast-Fryslân is a municipality of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. It was established 1 January 2019 and consists of the former municipalities of Dongeradeel, Ferwerderadiel and Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland, all three of which dissolved on the same day. The municipality is located in the province of Friesland on the Wadden Sea coast, in the north of the Netherlands. Noardeast-Fryslân is bordered by the municipalities of Waadhoeke, Ameland, Schiermonnikoog, Leeuwarden, Dantumadiel and the province of Groningen. The population in January 2019 was 45,181.
