Kevin Purse
Kevin Geoffrey Purse (born 16 March 1952) is an Australian social scientist, public servant, economist, trade unionist and writer. Purse has experience with Work Health and Safety issues in the trade union movement, public service and academic institutions. Purse is one of the pioneering academic voices in complex Work Health and Safety issues in Australia and, more specifically, South Australia. Education Purse holds a Bachelor of Economics from Flinders University, a Graduate Diploma in Social Sciences and a Doctor of Philosophy in Workers’ Compensation Policy from the University of Adelaide, his 2003 thesis titled ''Workers' Compensation Policy in Australia: Contention and Controversy 1970-1996 explained the policy shifts and underlying changes in workers' compensation policy and arrangements that took place in Australia from 1970 to 1996''. The Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) is a non-profit membership organization for directors. The AICD is a founding member of the Global Network of Director Institutes (GNDI). History The origins of the AICD can be traced back to the United Kingdom's Institute of Directors (IoD), formed by royal charter in 1906. Branches of the IoD appeared in the Australian states in the 1960s. These branches were amalgamated in January 1971 under the Institute of Directors in Australia, an autonomous body affiliated with the IoD in the United Kingdom. Royal Canberra Hospital Implosion
The Royal Canberra Hospital implosion was a failed building implosion that killed one person and injured nine others. The implosion occurred on 13 July 1997, when the city's superseded hospital buildings at Acton Peninsula on Lake Burley Griffin (that formerly constituted the Royal Canberra Hospital) were demolished to make way for the National Museum of Australia. SS Orontes
SS ''Orontes'' was an Orient Steam Navigation Company ocean liner. Vickers-Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness, England built her in 1929. She was the second Orient Line ships to be named after the Orontes River. The first was , which had been scrapped in 1925. Her sister ships were ''Orama'', ''Orford'', , and . Ten Pound Poms were British citizens who migrated to Australia and New Zealand after the Second World War. The government of Australia initiated the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme in 1945, and the government of New Zealand initiated a similar scheme in 1947. The Australian government arranged for assisted passage to Australia on chartered ships and aircraft. The migrants were called Ten Pound Poms because of the charge of £10 in processing fees to migrate to Australia. Ralph Clarke (Australian Politician)
Ralph Desmond Clarke (born 4 October 1951) is an Australian former politician. He was a Labor Party member of the South Australian House of Assembly between 1993 and 2002, representing the electorate of Ross Smith. He was the deputy leader of the State Parliamentary Labor Party, and thus the deputy opposition leader, until he was deposed in factional infighting. Ross Smith was abolished ahead of the 2002 state election, and Clarke tried to follow most of his constituents into the recreated seat of Enfield. Despite a secret ballot showing 60 of the 74 of the members of de-stacked local branches threw their support behind Clarke for 2002 preselection, the state executive intervened to install John Rau, a former colleague of Clarke's in the Centre Left faction who had made the switch to the Right. Mark Butler
Mark Christopher Butler (born 8 July 1970) is an Australian politician. He is a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and has served in the Australian House of Representatives, House of Representatives since 2007. Don Dunstan
Donald Allan Dunstan (21 September 1926 – 6 February 1999) was an Australian politician who served as the 35th premier of South Australia from 1967 to 1968, and again from 1970 to 1979. He was a member of the House of Assembly (MHA) for the division of Norwood from 1953 to 1979, and leader of the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party from 1967 to 1979. Before becoming premier, Dunstan served as the 38th attorney-general of South Australia and the treasurer of South Australia. He is the fourth longest serving premier in South Australian history. Electoral District Of Ross Smith
The electoral district of Ross Smith was an electorate for the South Australian Legislative Assembly. It was replaced by the electoral district of Enfield for the 2002 election. Sir Ross Macpherson Smith was a member of the Australian Light Horse at Gallipoli and Sinai during World War I. He then joined the Australian Flying Corps after learning to fly in Egypt. He and his brother won the 1919 England to Australia air race (taking almost a month) and established an aerodrome at Northfield. The naming of the seat was unique amongst electoral districts in South Australia, and indeed anywhere within Australia, in that it incorporated the first name of the individual it was named after.
