Kent Intake Unit
The Kent Intake Unit (KIU) is a facility located in Dover, led by the Home Office for the processing of migrants who have crossed the English Channel. The department describes the centre as a "short-term holding facility". In November 2022 it became a centre for processing unaccompanied child asylum seekers. History In September 2020, Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) visited a number of short-term immigration detention holding facilities; inspectors determined that KIU and Frontier House were not suitable for “very lengthy detentions”, but that some detainees had been held for over two days in rooms with no sleeping facilities, showers, or access to open air, leading to a high risk of spreading COVID-19. Tug Haven was a migrant processing facility located at the Port of Dover, south-east England. It operated from December 2018 until January 2022, serving as the initial reception point for English Channel migrant crossings (2018–present), migrants who had crossed the English Channel to reach the United Kingdom. Following critical reports about its conditions and operations, it was replaced by new facilities at Western Jet Foil and Manston arrivals and processing centre. Manston arrivals and processing centre is a centre used for the processing of migrants who have crossed the English Channel, located on the former site of RAF Manston in Manston, Kent, United Kingdom. Robert Edward Jenrick (born 9 January 1982) is a British politician who has been Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Lord Chancellor since November 2024.
