Kendall Gretsch
Kendall Gretsch (born April 2, 1992) is an American triathlete, Paralympic biathlon, biathlete and Paralympic cross-country skiing, cross-country skier. She was born with spina bifida. She has competed in both Summer Paralympics and Winter Paralympics and has a unique distinction of winning gold medals in both Summer Paralympics and Winter Paralympics. Education Gretsch attended Downers Grove North High School. Gretsch studied at Washington University in St. Louis where she earned a degree in Bio Medical Engineering. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. Career 2018 Winter Paralympics Gretsch made her Paralympic debut at the 2018 Winter Paralympics and created history in her first Paralympic appearance after claiming a gold medal in the Biathlon at the 2018 Winter Paralympics – Women's 6 kilometres, women's 6km sitting biathlon event. Downers Grove, Illinois
Downers Grove is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1832 by Pierce Downer, whose surname serves as the eponym for the village. Per the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population of the village was 50,248. Para Triathlon
Para triathlon is a variant of the triathlon for athletes with a physical disability. The sport is governed by World Triathlon (TRI; formerly known as the International Triathlon Union or ITU), and was first held as a Paralympic event at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At events sanctioned by World Triathlon, athletes compete over a para triathlon sprint distance event with a 750m swim, 20km cycle using handcycles, bicycles or tandem bicycles with a guide and a 5km wheelchair or running race. Athletes compete in nine sport classes according to the nature of their physical impairments, with variations made to the traditional event structure commensurate with their disability. Spina Bifida
Spina bifida (SB; ; Latin for 'split spine') is a birth defect in which there is incomplete closing of the vertebral column, spine and the meninges, membranes around the spinal cord during embryonic development, early development in pregnancy. There are three main types: spina bifida occulta, meningocele and myelomeningocele. Meningocele and myelomeningocele may be grouped as spina bifida cystica. The most common location is the Lumbar vertebrae, lower back, but in rare cases it may be in the Thoracic vertebrae, middle back or Cervical vertebrae, neck. Occulta has no or only mild signs, which may include a hairy patch, dimple, dark spot or swelling on the back at the site of the gap in the spine. The 2019 ITU World Triathlon Series was the 11th season of the World Triathlon Series, the top level international series for triathlon, since its establishment in 2009. The season consisted of eight pairs of triathlon races for both a men's and woman's competition, beginning on 8 March in Abu Dhabi, and concluding on 1 September with the grand final at Lausanne, Switzerland. The 2024 World Triathlon Championship Series was the 16th season of the World Triathlon Championship Series, the top level international series for triathlon, since its establishment in 2009, and crowned the 36th official World Triathlon Champion for both men and women since the first was crowned in 1989. The season originally consisted of seven pairs of triathlon races for both a men's and women's competition, beginning on 3 May in Abu Dhabi, and concluding on 20 October with the grand final in Torremolinos; however the opening race was cancelled due to extreme weather conditions. The World Triathlon Championship Series is an annual series of triathlon events organised by World Triathlon. The series is used to crown an annual world champion since 2008. Previously, the ITU (the former name of World Triathlon) world champion between 1989 and 2008 had been decided in a single annual championship race.
