Kenneth Kaunda
Kenneth Kaunda (28 April 1924 – 17 June 2021), also known as KK, was a Zambian politician who served as the first president of Zambia from 1964 to 1991. He was at the forefront of the struggle for independence from Northern Rhodesia, British rule. Dissatisfied with Harry Nkumbula's leadership of the Zambian African National Congress, Northern Rhodesian African National Congress, he broke away and founded the Zambian African National Congress (1958–1959), Zambian African National Congress, later becoming the head of the socialist United National Independence Party (UNIP). Kaunda was the first president of independent Zambia. In 1973, following tribal and inter-party violence, all political parties except UNIP were banned through an amendment of the constitution after the signing of the Choma Declaration. Beatrice "Betty" Kaunda (née Kaweche Banda; 17 November 1928 – 18 September 2013) was a Zambian educator and inaugural First Lady of Zambia, first lady of Zambia from 1964 to 1991 as the wife of the country's first president, Kenneth Kaunda. She was known as Mama Betty Kaunda and the mother of Zambia by Zambians. As the first lady, she was part of many diplomatic visits and matron of many organizations. Thomas Mxolisi Kaunda (born 13 September 1972) is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal serving as a Permanent Delegate to the National Council of Provinces since 2024. John Kaunda
John Kaunda is a former Zambian goalkeeper who played for Nchanga Rangers in the seventies. He is remembered for saving a penalty against Algeria in 1977 which saw Zambia through to 1978 African Cup of Nations finals. Career Kaunda started out as a basketball player and was unknown until Rangers signed him on as a goalkeeper. The tall and solidly built Kaunda then developed into an international class shot stopper and made his debut when Zambia played Algeria in a CAN qualifier in Algiers in June 1977, ahead of regular goalkeeper Vincent Chileshe. Although Zambia lost 2–0, they reversed the score line two weeks later in Lusaka through a Godfrey Chitalu brace. Tilyenji Kaunda (born 1954) is a Zambian politician. Until 5 April 2021 he served as leader of the United National Independence Party (UNIP) Early life Tilyeni Kaunda is the son of Kenneth Kaunda, former President of Zambia. Career UNIP was led by his father from 1960 to 2000. Tilyenji assumed the leadership of UNIP in 2001, but on 5 April 2021 he lost internal party elections for the position of party President. He was replaced by Reverend Trevor Mwamba, an Anglican priest who had been living in Germany. Reverend Mwamba is the husband of the Botswana ambassador to Germany. Philemon Kaunda was a Zambian footballer who featured for Mufulira Wanderers in the early '80s and also played for Zambia as a central defender. His younger brother Philemon Mulala also played for both Wanderers and Zambia in the same period. Kaunda first played for Wanderers when he was still a school boy at Kantanshi Secondary School in 1977 and made his international debut the following year when he came on as 90th-minute substitute in a CECAFA Cup group stage match against Somalia which Zambia won 4–0, with coach Brian Tiler stating that he had a great future with the national team.
