Katharina Schmid
Katharina Schmid (née Althaus, born 23 May 1996) is a German ski jumper. She is a seven-time world champion, including one individual title and six team titles, as well as a two-time Olympic silver medalist, making her one of the most decorated athletes in the history of ski jumping. In May 2023, she married Patrick Schmid, the brother of Nordic combined athlete Julian Schmid. Career She has competed at World Cup level since the 2011/12 season. She finished 2nd in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 World Cup overall, and won individual silver medals at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics. She became the mixed team ski jumping world champion together with her German teammates Carina Vogt, Richard Freitag, and Severin Freund in Falun at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2015. Oberstdorf (Low Alemannic German, Low Alemannic: ''Oberschdorf'') is a Municipalities of Germany, municipality and skiing and hiking town in Germany, located in the Allgäu region of the Bavarian Alps. It is the southernmost settlement in Germany and one of its highest towns. At the center of Oberstdorf is a church whose tall spire serves as a landmark for navigating around town. FIS Ski Jumping World Cup
The FIS Ski Jumping World Cup is the world's highest level of ski jumping and the FIS Ski Flying World Cup as the subdivisional part of the competition. It was founded by Torbjørn Yggeseth for the 1979/80 season and organized by the International Ski Federation. Women began competing during the 2011/12 season. The rounds are hosted primarily in Europe, with regular stops in Japan and rarely in North America. Julian Schmid (born 1 September 1999) is a German nordic combined skier. Career Early career Schmid, representing SC Oberstdorf and initially coached by Thomas Müller, debuted internationally at the 2014 OPA Nordic Ski Games in Gérardmer, finishing fourth in the Gundersen event. Struggling in subsequent Alpine Cup events, he gained momentum and earned silver in the 2016 OPA Games team competition. In 2017, he debuted in the Continental Cup and scored his first points in Steamboat Springs. Schmid won team silver at the 2018 Nordic Junior World Ski Championships, followed by gold and silver in 2019 Nordic Junior World Ski Championships. Ski jumping is a winter sport in which competitors aim to achieve the farthest jump after sliding down on their skis from a specially designed curved ramp. Along with jump length, competitor's aerial style and other factors also affect the final score. Ski jumping was first contested in Norway in the late 19th century, and later spread through Europe and North America in the early 20th century. Along with cross-country skiing, it constitutes the traditional group of Nordic skiing disciplines. FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2025
The 44th FIS Nordic World Ski Championships was held from 26 February to 9 March 2025 in Trondheim, Norway. Host selection The location was scheduled to be decided in May 2020 during the 52nd FIS Congress in Pattaya, Thailand, but that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The vote instead took place during a video conference on 3 October 2020. Trondheim won the bid to host the event unanimously as there were no opposing bids submitted. This was the second time the city is hosting the Championships, having hosted it in 1997. The city had also submitted a bid for 2023, but lost out to Planica, Slovenia. It was the sixth time for Norway to host the Championships. The Granåsen Ski Centre, which was also used during Trondheim's hosting of the 1997 Championships, was the main venue where the competitions were held.
