Kandalaksha () is a town in Kandalakshsky District of Murmansk Oblast, Russia, located at the head of Kandalaksha Gulf on the White Sea, north of the Arctic Circle. Kandalaksha Gulf
The Kandalaksha Gulf (, , ) is located in the Republic of Karelia, and Murmansk Oblast in northwestern Russia. Forming the north-western corner of the White Sea, it is one of four large bays and gulfs of this sea, the others being the Onega Bay (south-west), the Dvina Bay (south), and the Mezen Bay (south east). The Kola Peninsula lies north of the Kandalaksha Gulf. The city of Kandalaksha is located at the northern tip of the gulf; the new oil port Vitino, some 10 km to the south. There are hundreds of Skerry, skerries in the gulf. The gulf is shallow, reaching 300 meters on its western side. In 1976, the upper reaches of the gulf were designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance, notably as a breeding ground for migratory waterfowl such as the sea duck. Kola Peninsula
The Kola Peninsula (; ) is a peninsula in the extreme northwest of Russia, and one of the largest peninsulas of Europe. Constituting the bulk of the territory of Murmansk Oblast, it lies almost completely inside the Arctic Circle and is bordered by the Barents Sea to the north and by the White Sea to the east and southeast. Operation Arctic Fox
Operation Arctic Fox (German: ''Unternehmen Polarfuchs''; ; Russian: ''Кандалакшская операция'') was the codename given to a World War II campaign by German and Finnish forces against Soviet Northern Front defenses at Salla, Murmansk Oblast, in July 1941. The operation was part of the larger Operation Silver Fox (''Silberfuchs''; ) which aimed to capture the vital port of Murmansk. Arctic Fox was conducted in parallel to Operation Platinum Fox (''Platinfuchs''; ) in the far north of Lappland. The principal goal of Operation Arctic Fox was to capture the town of Salla and then to advance in the direction of Kandalaksha (Finnish: Kantalahti) to block the railway route to Murmansk. Arctic Circle
The Arctic Circle is one of the two polar circles, and the northernmost of the five major circle of latitude, circles of latitude as shown on maps of Earth at about 66° 34' N. Its southern counterpart is the Antarctic Circle. The Arctic Circle marks the southernmost latitude at which, on the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun does not rise all day, and on the Northern Hemisphere's summer solstice, the Sun does not set. Nina Varlamova
Nina Konstantinovna Varlamova (Russian: Нина Константиновна Варламова; 11 February 1954 – 17 December 2008) was a Russian politician. She was born on 11 February 1954. Varlamova served as the mayor of the northern town of Kandalaksha in Murmansk Oblast. Varlamova was elected Mayor of Kandalaksha in 2007. Death Varlamova was killed by a mentally unstable man on 17 December 2008. She was 54 years old. The man had reportedly threatened Varlamova several times leading up to her murder, though she had never taken his threats seriously. She was found lying in the street around 9 pm with knife wounds to her neck. She had managed to drag herself 15 meters from the scene of the attack before collapsing. Vitino () is an oil port on the White Sea in Russia. It is located near Beloye More railway station, 28 kilometers by road south of Kandalaksha, Murmansk Oblast, on the western shore of Kandalaksha Gulf.
