Kalkut
Samaresh Basu (; 11 December 1924 – 12 March 1988) was an Indian writer in modern Bengali literature, known for his versatility and vast range of themes. He wrote under the pen name Kalkut. Basu was awarded the 1980 Sahitya Akademi Award in Bengali, by Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, for his novel, ''Shamba''. He won the 30th Filmfare Awards, 1983 Filmfare Awards for Filmfare Award for Best Story, Best Story for ''Namkeen''. Biography Basu was born on 11 December 1924 in Bikrampur, Dhaka (present day Bangladesh). He married Gauri Basu in 1942. In his early days, he worked at a factory at Ichapore, Ichapore, West Bengal. He was imprisoned between 1940 and 1950 for his involvement in trade unions and Communist party. It was in prison, he penned his first published novel, ''Uttaranga''. Nirjan Saikate
''Nirjan Saikate'' () (English subtitle: The Desolate Beach) is a Bengali language, Bengali film directed by Tapan Sinha. It was released in 1963. This movie is an adaptation of the novel by the same name from eminent Bengali writer Samaresh Basu, who wrote this travelogue under his pen name 'Kalkut'. The film won the IFFI_Best_Film_Award#Silver_Peacock_Award_winners_(Best_Feature_Film_-_Discontinued), Silver Peacock - Best Feature Film at the 3rd International Film Festival of India, 3rd IFFI. Mrinal Sen
Mrinal Sen ( ; 14 May 1923 – 30 December 2018) was a Bengali film director and screenwriter known for his work primarily in Cinema of West Bengal, Bengali, and a few Hindi cinema, Hindi and Telugu cinema, Telugu language films. Regarded as one of the finest Indian filmmakers, along with his contemporaries Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, and Tapan Sinha, Sen played a major role in India's parallel cinema movement, which offered a realistic, socially aware counterpoint to splashy Bollywood films, as well as in the country's New Wave cinema. ''Calcutta 71'' is a 1972 Bengali film directed by noted Indian art film director Mrinal Sen. This film is considered to be the second film of Mrinal Sen's ''Calcutta'' trilogy, the other two being ''Interview'', and '' Padatik''. The film is a collection of stories depicting the 1970s. The Naxalite movement, starvation of common people, and social and political corruption are shown. There are four disjunct subplots shown in the film. Plot The prologue of the film follows after the plot of ''Interview''. The main protagonist Ranjit Mallick is brought to trial in a "metaphorical" courtroom, for he undressed a mannequin wearing a suit in a tailoring shop, because he was provoked by the "audience" for his failure to ace the interview as he couldn't manage to get a suit. Salil Dutta
Salil Dutta (30 November 1931 – 20 September 2004) was an Indian Bengalis, Bengali director, screenwriter and actor. He is well known for his films Surya Sikha (1963), Stree (1972) and Seyi Chokh (1976). Career Dutta was born in 1931 in British India. He started his career as assistant director of ''Trijama'' in 1956 and ''Khokababur Pratyabartan'' in 1960. The first film directed by him is Surya Sikha (1963) starred Uttam Kumar and Supriya Choudhury. He also acted in a number of films like ''Atithi (1965 film)'', ''Khelaghar'', ''Dhanyee Meye'' etc. Dutta directed 22 Bengali films in his career. ''Aparichita'' is a 1969 Indian Bengali-language thriller film co-written and directed by Salil Dutta. Produced by Debnath Roy and Geetali Dutta under the banner of R. D. Tapan Sinha
Tapan Sinha (2 October 1924 – 15 January 2009) was one of the most prominent Indian film directors of his time forming a legendary quartet with Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen.
