Jurij Fedynskyj
Yuriy Fedynsky (born in 1975, United States)— Ukrainian-American composer, torbanist, bandurist and singer-songwriter, producer, bandleader, luthier, cultural activist and pedagogue. Fedynsky is a performer on kobza, torban and traditional bandura. He was born in the USA, but moved permanently to his ancestral Kyiv, (Ukraine) after the break-up of the USSR, specifically to pursue a career in Ukrainian folklore. He studied piano under Henry Doskiy and bandura under Julian Kytasty. He is one of the founding members of the Experimental Bandura Trio, together with Julian Kytasty and Michael Andrec. He performed with the Detroit-based Ukrainian Bandurist Choir. He also collaborated with Ukrainian rock band Haydamaky. He is also a co-founder of several ensembles, in particular The Carpathians, Run Through the Jungle and Chorea Cozacky (with Taras Kompanichenko. He is a member in Kyiv Kobzar Guild. Kobzarstvo () in the wider definition, is the art and related culture of singing to the accompaniment of the Ukrainian folk instruments known as the bandura, kobza and the Ukrainian hurdy-gurdy whom as the lira. More specifically, it deals with the related culture of the blind professional itinerant folk singers, known as the kobzars and the lirnyks. It includes their musical genres, style of performing, playing techniques, customs, secret language (known as Lebiy), organization and para-religious traditions. The study of kobzarstvo initially started in the mid 18th century and continues to this day. The wider definition, although not accurate, it can also include the culture of the more modern non-blind conservatory trained musicians and bandura ensembles - both amateur and professional. He was an active participant in the Orange Revolution that took place in Ukraine from November 2004 to January 2005 as well as Euromaidan 2013–2014. He is laureate of the Vasyl Stus Prize. A duma (russian: дума) is a Russian assembly with advisory or legislative functions. The term ''boyar duma'' is used to refer to advisory councils in Russia from the 10th to 17th centuries. Starting in the 18th century, city dumas were formed across Russia. A ''kobzar'' ( ua, кобзар, pl. kobzari ua, кобзарі) was an itinerant Ukrainian bard who sang to his own accompaniment, played on a multistringed bandura or kobza. Tradition Kobzars were often blind and became predominantly so by the 1800s. ''Kobzar'' literally means ' kobza player', a Ukrainian stringed instrument of the lute family, and more broadly — a performer of the musical material associated with the kobzar tradition. The professional kobzar tradition was established during the Hetmanate Era around the sixteenth century in Ukraine. Kobzars accompanied their singing with a musical instrument known as the kobza, bandura, or lira.
