Joseph Gilbert (Royal Navy Officer)
Joseph Gilbert (1732–1831) was a British naval officer who was Master (naval), Master of HMS ''HMS Resolution (1771), Resolution'' on the second voyage of James Cook, second voyage of Captain James Cook. As Master he was responsible for a number of specific duties, especially navigation. He was born in Kirton, Lincolnshire, the youngest child of John Gilbert, a farmer and Churchwarden of Kirton and later Freiston. He joined the Royal Navy and rose to the rank of ship's Master. Between 1764 and 1769 he was Master of HMS ''HMS Guernsey, Guernsey'' which surveyed the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador. He was afterwards Master of HMS ''HMS Pearl, Pearl'', which surveyed Plymouth Sound, and then of HMS ''HMS Asia (1764), Asia''. He was then chosen, at the relatively advanced age of 40, by Captain James Cook to be Master of HMS ''Resolution'' for his second voyage of discovery. Joseph Trounsell Gilbert
Sir Joseph Trounsell Gilbert CBE QC (30 August 1888 – 23 January 1975) was a Bermudan barrister, judge and politician who ended a distinguished legal and political career as Chief Justice of Bermuda and as President of the Legislative Council of Bermuda. Biography Born on 30 August 1888, Trounsell Gilbert was educated at Bedford School and at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He was called to the Bar in 1914 and became a member of Lincoln's Inn. He was Attorney General, and a member of the Executive Council, of Bermuda between 1938 and 1952. He was Chief Justice of Bermuda, and President of the Legislative Council of Bermuda, between 1952 and 1958. Sir Trounsell Gilbert retired in 1958 and died on 23 January 1975. Joseph Gilbert Hamilton (November 11, 1907 – February 18, 1957) was an American professor of Medical Physics, Experimental Medicine, General Medicine, and Experimental Radiology as well as director (1948-1957) of the Crocker Laboratory, part of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Hamilton studied the medical effects of exposure to radioactive isotopes, which included the use of unsuspecting human subjects. He was married to painter Leah Hamilton. Early work Hamilton received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1929 from the University of California. He studied medicine in Berkeley and interned at the University of California Hospital, San Francisco. He was awarded his M.D. degree in 1936. Joseph Gilbert Totten (August 23, 1788 – April 22, 1864) fought in the War of 1812, served as Chief of Engineers and was regent of the Smithsonian Institution and cofounder of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1836, he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society. Early life and education Joseph G. Totten was born in New Haven, Connecticut, to Peter Gilbert Totten and Grace Mansfield. Joseph Francis Gilbert (1792 – 25 September 1855) was a British landscape painter and draughtsman. Biography Joseph Francis Gilbert was born in 1792 to Edward Gilbert. Gilbert was known for painting landscapes and scenery in Sussex, England. He resided in Chichester for several years and painted a number of scenes at Goodwood Racecourse. A painting by Gilbert is displayed in the tapestry bedroom at Uppark House, it depicts the view of the village of South Harting from the house. Gilbert died on 25 September 1855, at 17 Hoptons Almshouses, Green Walk in Southwark, London. Joseph Gilbert (1779–1852) was an English Congregational minister. Life Born in the parish of Wrangle, Lincolnshire, on March 20, 1779, he was son of a farmer who had come under the influence of John Wesley. After receiving some education at a nearby free school, he was apprenticed to a general shopkeeper at Burgh. On the expiration of his term he became assistant in a shop at East Retford, Nottinghamshire, of which he in time became proprietor. Here he began to associate with a group of Congregationalists, for whom he sometimes preached. In 1806 he gave up business and entered Rotherham College. His college course finished, he became minister at Southend, Essex. After a residence of eighteen months there he was appointed classical tutor in Rotherham College. Joseph Gilbert (1800 – 23 December 1881) was a pastoralist and winemaker in South Australia from 1839 until his death. Gilbert was born in Puckshipton, Wiltshire, England, in the Vale of Pewsey. The second of four sons, his father was Joseph Gilbert and his mother, Jane (née Pike). He studied at Marlborough College in Wiltshire and learnt about vine-growing and winemaking on the European mainland. He migrated to South Australia in 1839 on the ''Buckinghamshire'' and immediately erected his prefabricated two-roomed Manning cottage on an Adelaide allotment. He acquired a property on the South Para River and stocked it with sheep purchased from Van Diemen's Land.
