Joseph Creer
Joseph Creer (1 February 183217 August 1913) was a Manx-born Australian politician and cabinetmaker. Early life He was born on the Isle of Man to farmer Patrick Creer and Ann Quirk. He married Annie Harrison at Liverpool in 1854; they had nine children. In 1855 he migrated to New South Wales, settling in Maitland, where he worked as a builder and broom manufacturer. He left Maitland due to flooding and moved to Newcastle in 1870, working as a cabinet maker, until his business was destroyed by fire. He then established a successful business as an auctioneer. He was a prominent member of the temperance movement in Newcastle, and was appointed a magistrate in 1880. Civic and political career In 1867 he was elected an alderman of the Borough of West Maitland. He was defeated in February 1869, but re-elected to a casual vacancy in April 1869. The Protectionist Party or Liberal Protectionist Party was an Australian political party, formally organised from 1887 until 1909, with policies centred on protectionism. Mayor Of Newcastle (New South Wales)
This is a list of mayors and lord mayors of Newcastle and its predecessors, a local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The official title of Lord Mayors while holding office is: The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Newcastle. First incorporated on 7 June 1859 as the "Municipality of Newcastle", the council became known as "The Borough of Newcastle" on 23 December 1867 following the enactment of The Municipalities Act of 1867, and on 1 April 1938 the "City of Greater Newcastle" was proclaimed. In recognition of Newcastle's role as NSW's second oldest and largest city, the council applied to have the title "Lord Mayor", which was granted in October 1947 by King George VI and applied in October 1948. This made Newcastle the first Australian city that was not a capital to receive such an honour. On 1 April 1949 the official title of the council became the "City of Newcastle". Alfred Edden
Alfred Edden (24 November 1850 – 27 July 1930) was a politician, trade union organiser and coal miner in New South Wales, Australia. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for more than 28 years, including 3 as Secretary for Mines. He was a foundation member of the Labor Party but left the party twice, in 1891 over the question of the solidarity pledge and was expelled in 1916 over the question of conscription . Early life Edden was born in Tamworth, England. He was the son of a coal-miner who died in a mining accident shortly before his birth. He had little education and worked as a coal miner from age 10. He migrated with his family to Australia in 1879 and worked in collieries in the Newcastle area. After 1879 Edden became an official of the coal miners union and was charged with unlawful assembly during an 1888 strike. Thomas Walker (5 February 185810 May 1932), commonly referred to as Tommy Walker, was an Australian politician, a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. Walker was born in Preston, Lancashire, England, the son of corn miller and merchant Thomas Walker, and Ellen née Eccles. He was educated at Leyland Grammar School, then worked as a schoolteacher at Preston for two years. He then emigrated to Canada, where he worked as a farmhand and chemist's assistant. After returning to the United Kingdom he work as a journalist on the '' Preston Herald''. He later spent some time in Toledo, Ohio, where he spent 1876 lecturing on evolution and the occult. The following year he toured through New South Wales, England and South Africa, lecturing on spiritualism and politics. Ninian Melville
Ninian Melville (29 December 1843 – 26 June 1897) was an Australian politician in the late nineteenth century. Early life The son of a Scottish cabinet maker (Ninian Melville Jnr) who had been transported to Australia for stealing clothes, Melville was born in Sydney and followed his father into the furniture making business. Unfortunately, the business collapsed in 1866 under pressure from foreign imports and Melville began organising the unemployed to protest and demand protection for the industry. Politics He moved to Melbourne the following year where he put his carpentry skills to use with an undertaker and also unsuccessfully contested a seat in the Victorian Parliament. He returned to Sydney in 1874 and, campaigning on a protectionist platform, he eventually won the seat of Northumberland in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly at the 1880 by-election which he held until 1894.
