Jopie Pengel
Johan Adolf "Jopie" Pengel (20 January 1916 – 5 June 1970) was a Surinamese politician, and prime minister of Suriname from 30 June 1963 to 5 March 1969 for the National Party of Suriname (NPS). Biography Pengel was born in Paramaribo on 20 January 1916. He went to law school, but did not graduate. Van Dijck owned a large parcel of ground close to Pengel's home which was rented to poor Afro and Indo-Surinamese people, and started to demand large rent increases. Pengel started a protest movement against Van Dijck, and managed to raise enough money to buy the land. In 1949, he joined the National Party of Suriname, and was elected to the Estates of Suriname. He became one of the most influential politicians in Suriname at that time. In 1952, he became chairman of General Alliance of Labour Unions in Suriname. Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport , also known as Paramaribo-Zanderij International Airport, and locally referred to simply as JAP, is an airport located in the town of Zanderij and hub for airline carrier Suriname Airways, Surinam Airways, south of Paramaribo. Zanderij is a village located in the northern part of Suriname, situated 50 kilometres south of the capital Paramaribo on the Southern East-West Link. The Onafhankelijkheidsplein (; Independence Square) is a town square in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. The square is situated in the historical inner city, near the Suriname River and the Presidential Palace of Suriname. Before the independence of Suriname from the Netherlands in 1975, it was also called the ''Oranjeplein'' (Orange Square) and the ''Gouvernementsplein'' (Government Square). Paramaribo Zoo
The Paramaribo Zoo is the only zoo in Paramaribo, Suriname. The zoo opened in May 1972, and was an initiative of prime-minister Jopie Pengel. It is located adjacent to the in Rainville, Paramaribo. History Prime-minister Pengel privately kept many animals in his garden. When he added lions to his collection in 1966, he thought it would be better to share the animals in a zoo. In May 1972, the Paramaribo Zoo opened next to the . Unlike most zoos, about 75% of the animals are local wild animals who had been either confiscated or were former pets. Except for the tigers, all the animals are native to Suriname. In the 1980s, during the military dictatorship of Bouterse, a large part of the collection was lost. Blaka Watra
Cassipora is an Indigenous village of Lokono Amerindians located in the resort of Carolina in the Para District of Suriname. The village is situated near the Blaka Watra recreation area. It is also close to a 17th-century Jewish village; however, only the cemetery remains from that period. History Cassipora is located near a former Jewish settlement established in 1665, which was abandoned twenty years later in favour of neighbouring Jodensavanne. During the 19th century, the wood plantation Salem was located at the site. The village consists of small clusters of houses occupied by one family, which are spaced far apart. Cassipora is connected to the water supply and has been linked to the electricity grid since 2016. The village also has access to mobile phone services. However, for schooling and healthcare services, it relies on neighbouring Redi Doti, which can be reached by an unpaved road.
