Onafhankelijkheidsplein
The Onafhankelijkheidsplein (; Independence Square) is a town square in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. The square is situated in the historical inner city, near the Suriname River and the Presidential Palace of Suriname. Before the independence of Suriname from the Netherlands in 1975, it was also called the ''Oranjeplein'' (Orange Square) and the ''Gouvernementsplein'' (Government Square). Buiten-Sociëteit Het Park is located on the square. On 1 August 1996, the building which housed the National Assembly of Suriname burnt down. The National Assembly moved to the former park house. Buiten-Sociëteit Het Park
Buiten-Sociëteit Het Park is a park and former Club (organization), club located on Onafhankelijkheidsplein in Paramaribo, Suriname. On 1 August 1996, the building which housed the National Assembly (Suriname), National Assembly of Suriname burned down, and the National Assembly moved to the former park house. History The square which is nowadays called Onafhankelijkheidsplein (Independence Square) used to be a training ground for soldiers stationed at Fort Zeelandia (Paramaribo), Fort Zeelandia. In 1872, Captain van Landsberge had a meeting with governor , and it was decided to turn the grounds into a military park. The park would be maintained by the Netherlands Armed Forces in Suriname, army, but it was accessible to the public. The army constructed a buffet, a bandstand, and a bowling alley on the park. Congress Hall (Paramaribo)
The Congress Hall (Dutch: ''Congreshal'') is a convention and exhibition centre in Paramaribo, Suriname. It is located on Onafhankelijkheidsplein, and was completed in 1999. Overview In 1998, the Wijdenbosch government decided to build a convention centre for the 1999 CARICOM meeting. The Congress Hall was to be built on the location of the Palace Hotel. was chosen to design the building. Verkuijl wanted a completely transparent building. Aluminium was not an option, therefore, the building was constructed using steel and acrylite, commonly known as plexiglass. The Congresshall was built in six months, but initially suffered from a leakage problem which required the replacement of the stage and flooring. The Congress Hall is considered a controversial building. There are people who consider the building out of place among the historic wooden buildings in Paramaribo, and a poor replacement of the Palace Hotel, while others praise the vision of the architect. Presidential Palace Of Suriname
The Presidential Palace of Suriname (Dutch: Presidentieel paleis van de Republiek Suriname) is the presidential palace of Suriname in the capital of Paramaribo. It is located across from The Independence Square (Onafhankelijkheidsplein), which also houses the National Assembly of Suriname, the Congress building, the Court of Justice, and the Ministry of Finance. National Assembly (Suriname)
The National Assembly (, commonly abbreviated "DNA") is the Parliament, representing the legislative branch of government in Suriname. It is a unicameral legislature. The assembly has been situated in the former park house at the Independence Square in Paramaribo, after a fire destroyed the old building of representation on 1 August 1996. Suriname River
The Suriname River ( Dutch: ''Surinamerivier'') is long and flows through the country of Suriname. Its sources are located in the Guiana Highlands on the border between the Wilhelmina Mountains and the Eilerts de Haan Mountains (where it is known as the Gran Rio). The source of the Upper Suriname River is at the confluence of the Gran Rio and Pikin Rio near the village of Goddo. The river continues shortly after the reservoir along Brokopondo as the Lower Suriname River.
