Christy Ring Cup
The Christy Ring Cup () is an annual hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. Originally introduced as a second-tier competition, it is currently the third tier overall in the inter-county hurling championship system. Each year, the champions of the Christy Ring Cup are promoted to the Joe McDonagh Cup, and the lowest finishing team is relegated to the Nicky Rackard Cup. Kildare are the 2022 title-holders. The competition is named in honour of Christy Ring, a legendary player from Cork. The Christy Ring Cup, which was introduced in 2005, replaced the All-Ireland B Hurling Championship (1974-2004). Between 2005 and 2017 the Christy Ring Cup was the second tier hurling championship. Karl McKeegan
Karl McKeegan (born 1978) is an Irish former hurler who played as a centre-back at senior level for the Antrim county team. Playing career McKeegan began his hurling career at juvenile and underage levels with the Ruairí Óg club in Cushendall. He was still eligible for the minor grade when he joined the club's senior team in 1995. McKeegan spent over 20 years lining out for the senior team, during which time he won five Ulster SCHC titles and seven Antrim SHC titles. He ended his club career after a defeat by Na Piarsaigh in the 2016 All-Ireland club final. McKeegan first appeared on the inter-county scene at underage level with Antrim and won two Ulster MHC titles and three Ulster U21HC titles. He joined the senior team in 2002 and won ten consecutive Ulster SHC medals during a ten-year career. McKeegan captained Antrim to the Christy Ring Cup title in 2006. 2005 Christy Ring Cup
The 2005 Christy Ring Cup was the inaugural staging of the Christy Ring Cup, the Gaelic Athletic Association's second-tier hurling championship. Competing teams, from Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster were divided into two groups of five, in which teams played each other only once, meaning two home games and two away games per team. The top two teams of each group qualified for the knock-out stages. On 14 August 2005, Westmeath won the Christy Ring Cup following a 1-23 to 2-18 defeat of Down in the final. Kildare's Mattie Dowd was the Christy Ring Cup top scorer with 2-39. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points.
