John Riddell (genealogist)
John Riddell (1785 – 8 February 1862) was a Scottish peerage lawyer and genealogist. Life He was eldest son of Anne, eldest daughter of John Glassford of Dougalston, by Anne, daughter of Sir John Nisbet of Dean, and Henry Riddell of Little Govan. Educated for the law, he was called to the Scottish bar in 1807. Riddell made genealogy and Scottish peerage law a special study. He prepared the Crawford and Montrose peerage cases for James Lindsay, 24th Earl of Crawford. Riddell died unmarried at his house, 57 Melville Street, Edinburgh, on 8 February 1862. He was buried in the Dean Cemetery on the west side of the city. He left a number of manuscripts which, in terms of his will, were acquired by the Advocates' and Signet Libraries, Edinburgh. Jack Riddell
John Keith Riddell (December 10, 1931 – January 23, 2024) was a Canadian politician in Ontario. He served as a Member of the Provincial Parliament (MPP) in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1973 to 1990, representing Huron and Huron—Middlesex for the provincial Liberal Party. He was also Minister of Agriculture and Food from 1985 to 1989 in the government of David Peterson. Early life Riddell was born in London, Ontario, on December 10, 1931. He was educated at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph, and worked as a high school teacher, livestock sales owner, and operator-auctioneer. Political career Riddell was first elected to the Ontario legislature in a by-election on March 16, 1973, defeating Progressive Conservative candidate Don Southcott by 2,968 votes in the riding of Huron. John Riddell (born 1942) is a Canadian Marxist essayist, historian, editor, translator and activist. He is best known as editor of ''The Communist International in Lenin’s Time'', an eight-volume series of books of Communist International documents, many of which were translated into English for the first time. Biography Riddell's father, Robert Gerald Riddell, was a Canadian diplomat and Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations from 1950 until his death from a heart attack the next year. His mother, Kay Riddell Rouillard, founded the International Student Centre at the University of Toronto. As a high school student at University of Toronto Schools, Riddell helped plan and carry out a protest at the Liberal Party's rally at Maple Leaf Gardens on June 8, 1957, which Progressive Conservative Party organizer Allister Grosart termed “the turning point” in the 1957 Canadian federal election campaign. Sir John Riddell, 13th Baronet
Sir John Charles Buchanan Riddell, 13th Baronet, (3 January 1934 – 24 July 2010) was Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales from 1985 to 1990. He was Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland from 2000 to 2009. Riddell was born at Hepple, Northumberland. He succeeded to the Baronetcy of Riddell as an infant, on the death of his father in 1934. The family seat at Whitefield House, Hepple was bought by his ancestor Sir John Buchanan Riddell (1796–1822) from the Duke of Portland in 1804. Riddell was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, and served briefly as a Second Lieutenant in the King's Royal Rifle Corps (1952–54) before qualifying as a chartered accountant. In 1969 he married Sarah, daughter of Baron Richardson of Duntisbourne, who bore him three sons between 1974 and 1982. John Carre Riddell
John Carre Riddell (4 June 1809 – 22 December 1879) was a politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), a member of the Victorian Legislative Council and later, the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Riddell (pronounced ''Riddle'') was born in Linthill, Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire, Scotland, the third son of Thomas Riddell, of Camieston, and his wife Jane, ''née'' Ferrier. Riddell was educated at the High School, Edinburgh, and at the University of Edinburgh. John Leonard Riddell (February 20, 1807 – October 7, 1865) was a science lecturer, botanist, geologist, medical doctor, chemist, microscopist, numismatist, politician, and science fiction author in the United States. Corey Ford
Corey Ford (April 29, 1902 – July 27, 1969) was an American humorist, writer, outdoorsman, and screenwriter. He was friendly with several members of the Algonquin Round Table in New York City and occasionally lunched there.
