John Riddell (Marxist)
John Riddell (born 1942) is a Canadian Marxist essayist, historian, editor, translator and activist. He is best known as editor of ''The Communist International in Lenin’s Time'', an eight-volume series of books of Communist International documents, many of which were translated into English for the first time. Biography Riddell's father, Robert Gerald Riddell, was a Canadian diplomat and Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations from 1950 until his death from a heart attack the next year. His mother, Kay Riddell Rouillard, founded the International Student Centre at the University of Toronto. As a high school student at University of Toronto Schools, Riddell helped plan and carry out a protest at the Liberal Party's rally at Maple Leaf Gardens on June 8, 1957, which Progressive Conservative Party organizer Allister Grosart termed “the turning point” in the 1957 Canadian federal election campaign. ''Historical Materialism'' is a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal focused on the study of Marxist philosophy, historical materialism, political science, economics, modern society, and human history using a Marxist approach. Climate Justice
Climate justice is a type of environmental justice that focuses on the unequal impacts of climate change on marginalized or otherwise vulnerable populations. Climate justice seeks to achieve an equitable distribution of both the burdens of climate change and the efforts to mitigate climate change through advocacy and policy change. The economic burden of climate change mitigation is estimated by some at around 1% to 2% of GDP. Climate justice examines concepts such as equality, human rights, collective rights, justice and the historical responsibilities for climate change. Communist League (Canada)
The Communist League in Canada was founded as the " Revolutionary Workers League/Ligue Ouvrière Révolutionnaire" (RWL) in 1977 as the result of a merger of the League for Socialist Action (LSA), the Revolutionary Marxist Group (RMG) and the Groupe Marxiste Revolutionaire. Originally a Trotskyist party, the RWL was the Canadian section of the Fourth International (FI). The group followed the US Socialist Workers Party's (SWP) trajectory away from Trotskyism in favour of a view of Fidel Castro's Cuba as the vanguard of world revolution. The RWL purged members who did not support the new orientation, many of whom went on to form Socialist Challenge and Gauche Socialiste. In 1990, the RWL left the FI to become part of the new Pathfinder tendency spearheaded by the SWP and changed its name to the Communist League. Socialist Workers Party (United States)
The Socialist Workers Party (SWP) is a communist party in the United States. The SWP began as a group which, because it supported Leon Trotsky over Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, was expelled from the Communist Party USA. Since the 1930s, it has published '' The Militant'' as a weekly newspaper. It also maintains Pathfinder Press. Until the collapse of the Soviet Union, the SWP was the largest Trotskyist organization in the United States. During the 1960s and 1970s, the SWP and its youth wing, the Young Socialist Alliance, were the third-largest socialist organizations, after the Communist Party USA and Students for a Democratic Society. The SWP suffered many splits and its membership declined. The modern SWP is smaller than its progeny, such as the Trotskyist Socialist Alternative and the Marxist-Leninist Party for Socialism and Liberation.
