John P. Bell
John P. Bell (born June 1, 1979) is an American digital artist, educator, and software developer at Dartmouth College and the University of Maine whose work centers on creative collaboration and digital culture. History Bell began developing software to support digital humanities and art at the University of Maine's Still Water lab in 2003. He joined the teaching faculty of University of Maine's New Media department in 2008. In 2011 he became one of the founding faculty of the University of Maine's Innovative Communication Design and Digital Curation programs. Simultaneously, Bell and his collaborators Richard R. Corey and Bethany Engstrom proposed an unusual doctoral program where the three would work together on a shared research project and collective dissertation studying collaboration in the arts. Orono, Maine
Orono ( ) is a New England town, town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. Located on the Penobscot River, Penobscot and Stillwater River (Maine), Stillwater rivers, it was first settled by Province of Maine, American colonists in 1774. They named it in honor of Chief Joseph Orono, a sachem of the indigenous Penobscot nation who long occupied this territory. In the 19th century, the town became a center of the lumber industry. Sawmills on the rivers were powered by the water, and logs were floated downriver on the Penobscot for shipping and export from coastal ports. Since 1865, it has been the location of the University of Maine, established as a land-grant institution and the state's flagship educational institution. Jon Ippolito
Jon Ippolito (IPA: Help:IPA/Italian, [ipˈpɔːlito], born March 19, 1962) is an American artist, educator, new media scholar, and former curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Ippolito studied astrophysics and painting in the early 1980s, then pursued Internet art in the 1990s. His works explore digitally induced collaboration and networking, a theme that is prominent in his later scholarship. The conservation and restoration of new media art is the study and practice of techniques for sustaining new media art created using from materials such as digital, biological, performative, and other variable media. New media art runs a unique risk when it comes to longevity that has resulted in the development of new and different preservation and restoration strategies and tools. To preserve and restore these pieces of new media art, there are a variety of strategies including storage, migration, emulation, and reinterpretation. There are even more tools used to implement these strategies including Archivematica, BitCurator, Conifer, Media Info, PRONOM, QC Tools, and the Variable Media Questionnaire. Joline Blais (born May 9, 1960) is an American writer, educator, new media scholar, and permaculture designer. As Associate Professor in the University of Maine'New Media Department Blais teaches classes on digital narrative, sustainable design, and permaculture. With Jon Ippolito in 2002, she co-founded Still Water, a new media lab she continues to co-direct that is devoted to studying and building creative networks.
