John Nugent (journalist)
John Nugent ( – March 29, 1880) was an Irish journalist and U.S. government agent. Nugent was born in County Galway but travelled with his parents to the United States at an early age. He was educated at a Catholic college in New Jersey. In the 1840s, he worked as a journalist with the ''New York Herald''. In 1848, Nugent was leaked a copy of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which would end the Mexican–American War after it was amended and approved by the Senate. Nugent was questioned by senators but did not reveal his source. Subsequently, Nugent traveled with a party of Forty-Niners from New York, led by John Coffee Hays, that traveled to California from San Antonio, Texas, over the Southern Route, through El Paso across New Mexico Territory to Fort Yuma. John Cullen Nugent
John Cullen Nugent (1921-2014) was a Canadian artist and educator known primarily for his public art works, often in the form of abstract sculpture. Early life and education Born and raised in Montreal on 5 January 1921, the young Nugent attended high school in St. Paul, Minnesota before returning to Canada prior to the Second World War and joining the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, training at Regina, Saskatchewan, Regina and Ottawa. Three years later, Nugent joined the Canadian Army, serving in the Provost (military police), provost corps in the 1940s. Following the war, Nugent was discharged and studied art at College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University, St John's University (Collegeville, Minnesota), where he was exposed to liberal ideals and the postwar Catholic renewal in the arts. John Nugent Fitch (24 October 1840 – 11 January 1927) was a British botanical illustrator and lithographer, best known for his contribution of 528 plates to ''The Orchid Album'', a landmark work of eleven volumes published between 1872 and 1897. Fitch was the nephew of botanical artist Walter Hood Fitch (1817–1892). Fitch also contributed to Curtis's Botanical Magazine from 1878, joining a select group of illustrators such as William Kilburn, James Sowerby, Sydenham Edwards, William Jackson Hooker and Walter Hood Fitch. John Dillon Nugent
__NOTOC__ John Dillon Nugent (22 December 1869 – 1 March 1940) was an Irish nationalist politician, insurance representative and company director. He was born at Keady, County Armagh, the son of grocer John Nugent and Sarah Dillon. He was educated at National Schools there. He married in August 1896 and with his wife Mary, née Nolan, had seven children. He was the national secretary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) from 1904 until his death. Patrick Maume described him as Joseph Devlin's 'right-hand man'. Marie Coleman in the ''Dictionary of Irish Biography'' states that he used the AOH to intimidate the Irish Party's opponents, and that he orchestrated the attacks on William O'Brien at the infamous United Irish League ‘baton convention’ of 1909. Nugent was a member of Dublin Corporation from 1912 and a Poor Law Guardian from 1908 to 1920. John Valentine Nugent (1796 – 12 June 1874) was an Irish-born educator, journalist and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Placentia and St. Mary's from 1836 to 1842 and St. John's from 1842 to 1848 in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. Nugent died in St. John's in 1874. Early life He was born in Waterford, Ireland. Nugent married Ellen Maria Creedon. John Nugent, 5th Earl of Westmeath (1671 – 3 July 1754) was an Irish nobleman and professional soldier. He was the third son of Christopher Nugent, Lord Delvin and Mary Butler, daughter of Colonel Richard Butler. Nugent succeeded his brother, Thomas Nugent, 4th Earl of Westmeath, in 1752. He served in the French army, seeing action at Ramillies, Oudenarde, Malplaquet, the sieges of Douai and Quesnoy, and at Denain. He began as an officer in 1706 and ended as Maréchal de camp in 1744. He retired from active service in 1748. He died at Nivelles in Walloon Brabant in 1754.
