John MacFarlane (Ipswich)
John MacFarlane (2 June 1829 – 7 March 1894) was a draper and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography MacFarlane was born at Glasgow, Scotland, to father John Macfarlane his wife Agnes (née Housten). After receiving his education at parish schools in Glasgow he arrived in Queensland aboard the ''Helenslee'' in 1862 and became a store keeper with Cribb & Foote in Ipswich, Queensland, Ipswich. He was then a draper at Greenham & Bennett before becoming a director with Woollen Co. from 1875 until 1894. He married Margaret McKenzie (died 1900) and had four sons and two daughters. John MacFarlane (New South Wales Politician)
John MacFarlane (31 July 1813 – 6 July 1873) was a Scottish-born Australian physician and politician. He was born in Glasgow and studied medicine at Glasgow University, qualifying in 1837. MacFarlane was the first to describe desmoid tumours. He worked as a ship's doctor until 1840, when he settled in Sydney and opened a practice. In 1847 he married Agnes Grace Johnstone. He was honorary physician at Sydney Infirmary from 1847 to 1869 and an examiner for the University of Sydney in 1856; he was also awarded an honorary degree from the University of Melbourne. In 1860 he was president of the Australian Medical Association. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1858 to 1861 and from 1861 to 1870. John MacFarlane (1823 – 10 April 1880) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography MacFarlane was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of David Macfarlane and his wife Margaret (née Gibb). He arrived in Victoria around 1840 where he engaged in Squatting pursuits. In 1865 he moved to Queensland and as a member of a Victorian firm, took up Oakey Creek run on the Mackenzie River in Central Queensland. Like most stations in the area it proved unsuitable for sheep and after four years he moved to Rockhampton where he established a successful stock and station agent. John Duncan MacFarlane
John Duncan MacFarlane (July 27, 1892 – December 8, 1982) was a Scottish-born farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Melfort from 1934 to 1938 as a Liberal. He was born in Gargunnock and was educated in Scotland. He later worked for a law office in Stirling. In 1910, MacFarlane came to Canada, where he worked on farms and eventually earned his engineer's certificate. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in agriculture. MacFarlane served with the Royal Canadian Engineers and then with the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. After the war, he worked for the Soldier Settlement Board for three years. MacFarlane then settled on a farm near Carlea, Saskatchewan, where he raised Clydesdale horses, Shorthorn cattle, Yorkshire pigs, Shropshire sheep and Barred Rock chickens. John Sangster Macfarlane (1818 – 2 February 1880) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament in Auckland, New Zealand. He unsuccessfully contested the for , and the for . He then represented the Waitemata electorate from 1876 to 1879, when he was defeated. He was born in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland and arrived in Auckland via Sydney. He died in Auckland on 2 February 1880 from cancer of the stomach. Dr John Lisle Hall McFarlane MB ChB (19 June 1851 – 17 March 1874) was a Scottish physician and international rugby union player and sportsman. Personal history McFarlane was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica in 1851 to John MacFarlane, and Edinburgh-educated surgeon, who had married Anna Smith, the daughter of a Jamaican estate owner. McFarlane's middle name of Lisle was taken from his mother's forebears who held connections to the Barons Lisle. McFarlane grew up in Scotland and was educated at several of the country's finest schools. He attended the Edinburgh Institute of Maths before switching as a boarder at the private Abbey Park School in St Andrews. It was at the establishments that he developed his enjoyment of sport and where he began to play rugby. John Menzies Macfarlane (October 11, 1833 – June 4, 1892) was a Scottish-born Latter-day Saint hymnwriter, choir director and civic leader who spent most of his life in Utah Territory. Life Macfarlane was born in Stirling, Scotland. He came to Utah Territory in the early 1850s and settled in Cedar City in 1853. In 1852, Macfarlane married Ann Chatterley. Multiple sources identified him as one of the many Iron County Militia men involved in the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre. Macfarlane served as superintendent of schools from 1866 to 1868 for Iron County, Utah, and the leader of the choir in Cedar City which he took to St. George. John Muirhead Macfarlane FRSE LLD (28 September 1855, Kirkcaldy, Fife – 16 September 1943, Lancaster) was a Scottish botanist. Life He was born in Kirkcaldy in Fife on 28 September 1855. He was educated locally, then studied sciences at the University of Edinburgh, first graduating with a BSc, followed by a degree of Doctor of Science in 1883. He occupied several different academic positions at the University of Edinburgh and the Royal Dick Veterinary College. In 1885 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were Alexander Dickson, Robert Gray, Alexander Buchan and Andrew Peebles Aitken. During this period he lived at 3 Bellevue Terrace on the eastern fringe of the New Town. John MacFarlane is an American professor of philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley interested in logic and metaphysics. He has made influential contributions to truth-value theory inferential semantics. In 2015, he was elected a Fellow the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also known for his contributions to open source software, especially the Pandoc document converter and other Markdown parsers and verifiers.
