John Joe Callanan
John Joseph Callanan (10 March 1894 – 19 December 1970) was an Irish hurler who played as a centre-forward for the Tipperary and Dublin senior teams. Born in Thurles, County Tipperary, Callanan first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-four when he first linked up with the Tipperary senior team. He joined the senior panel during the 1918 championship and was a regular member of the Tipperary and Dublin teams at various times for over a decade. During that time he won two All-Ireland medals, two Leinster medals and one Munster medal. The All-Ireland-winning captain in 1930, Callanan was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. As a member of the Munster inter-provincial Callanan won one Railway Cup medal. At club level he was a one-time championship medallist with Thurles Sarsfields while he also played with Collegians. Thurles Sarsfields GAA
Thurles Sarsfields is a Tipperary GAA club which is located in County Tipperary, Ireland. Both hurling and Gaelic football are played in the "Mid-Tipperary" divisional competitions. The club is centred in the town of Thurles at Semple Stadium. The club was founded in 1881 and is the most honoured club in the county, with 36 Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship titles. Thurles Sarsfields are affiliated with the town's juvenile club Dúrlas Óg. History On 19 October 2009, Sarsfields captured their 30th Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship, defeating neighbours Drom ’n Inch at Semple Stadium by 0-14 to 0-5. 1930 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 1930 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 44th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county hurling tournament. The championship began on 18 May 1930 and ended on 7 September 1930. Cork entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were defeated by Clare in the Munster semi-final. On 7 September 1930, Tipperary won the championship following a 5-06 to 3-06 victory over Dublin in the All-Ireland final at Croke Park. This was their 11th championship title overall and their first title since 1925. The 1920 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 34th staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 9 May 1920 and ended on 14 May 1922. Cork GAA, Cork were the 1919 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final, defending champions; however, they were defeated by Dublin GAA, Dublin by 4-9 to 4-3 in the 1920 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final, final. Martin Kennedy (hurler)
Martin Kennedy (20 November 1898 – 17 July 1983) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Toomevara and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team from 1922 until 1936. Kennedy is regarded as one of Tipperary's greatest-ever players. Playing career Club Kennedy first played club hurling as a goalkeeper with the Borrisoleigh club. He had been born in that portion of the parish and contested two county intermediate finals before transferring his allegiance to the Toomevara club in 1919. It was only when the regular full-forward on that team got injured that Kennedy was used in this position and he went on to enjoy much success. He won his first senior county title in 1919 and added further county medals in 1923, 1930 and 1931. Kennedy continued to play until well into his forties and joined the Kildangan club after marrying and settling there. Liam MacCarthy Cup
The Liam MacCarthy Cup () is a trophy awarded annually by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) to the team that wins the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. Based on the design of a medieval drinking vessel, the trophy was first awarded in 1923 to the winners of the (delayed) 1921 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final. The original 1920s trophy was retired in the 1990s, with a new identical trophy awarded annually since 1992. The original trophy is on permanent display in the GAA Museum at Croke Park in Dublin. The GAA organises the series of games, which are played during the summer months. Bob McConkey
Robert McConkey (11 January 1895 – 5 January 1961) was an Irish hurler. His championship career at the senior level with the Limerick county team spanned sixteen years from 1918 until 1934. McConkey first played competitive hurling with the St Patrick's club in Limerick. He later joined the Young Irelands club and won five county senior championship medals between 1920 and 1932. Impressive displays at the club level brought McConkey to the attention of the Limerick senior team selectors and he was quickly added to the team. Over the course of a sixteen-year period, he won three All-Ireland medals, beginning with his first in 1918, a second as captain of the team in 1921 and a third and final winners' medal in 1934. McConkey also won four Munster medals. After being chosen on the Munster inter-provincial team for the first time in 1927, McConkey was an automatic choice on the panel for two seasons. He is the younger brother of actor Martin Sheen and the uncle of Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Renée Estevez, and Ramon Estevez.
