Johannes Loesel
Johannes Loesel (26 August 1607 – 30 March 1655) was a German botanist and physician who was an expert on the natural flora of Prussia. Biography Loesel was born in Brandenberg, Prussia (now Ushakovo, Russia) on 26 August 1607. He earned his PhD at the University of Königsberg in 1632, and attained his MD at University of Leiden in 1639. Loesel travelled around Europe, specifically visiting France, England, and Holland, before returning to the University of Königsberg as a professor of anatomy and botany. Near the end of his life, Loesel was working on his opus; a Flora of the natural plants of Prussia. However, he was plagued by poor health and never saw to its completion. Ushakovo, Novomoskovsky Rural Okrug, Guryevsky District, Kaliningrad Oblast
Ushakovo (; or '; ; ) is a village in the Russian exclave Kaliningrad Oblast. It is situated at the mouth of the Prokhladnaya River at the Vistula Lagoon. History The Battle of Pokarwis between pagan Prussians and the Teutonic Knights took place nearby in 1261. The Teutonic Knights founded the village as ''Brandenburg'' to honor Otto III, Margrave of Brandenburg who supported the order in the Prussian Crusade, and erected a castle in 1266. It became known as "Brandenburg (Frisches Haff)" and "Brandenburg in Ostpreußen" to differentiate it from Brandenburg an der Havel. In 1454, the region was incorporated by King Casimir IV Jagiellon to the Kingdom of Poland upon the request of the anti-Teutonic Prussian Confederation. ''Sisymbrium loeselii'' is a species of flowering plant in the family Brassicaceae known by several common names, including small tumbleweed mustard, false London-rocket, and tall hedge mustard. It is native to Eurasia, and it is known on other continents as an introduced species and in some areas a common roadside weed. It is an annual herb producing a hairy, erect stem which can exceed a meter in height. The leaf blades are divided into triangular, lance-shaped, and toothed linear lobes, and are borne on petioles. The top of the stem is occupied by a raceme of flowers with bright yellow petals each measuring just under a centimeter long. The fruit is a silique up to 3.5 centimeters in length containing tiny seeds. This plant is allelopathic against other species growing around it. A Flora is a book or other work which describes the plant species occurring in an area or time period, often with the aim of allowing identification. The term is usually capitalized to distinguish it from the use of "flora" to mean the plants rather than their descriptions. Some classic and modern Floras are listed below. Traditionally Floras are books, but some are now published on CD-ROM or websites. The area that a Flora covers can be either geographically or politically defined.
