Jochen Sandig
Jochen Sandig (* born 5 January 1968 in Esslingen) is a German cultural entrepreneur and founder of four cultural institutions in Berlin. Biography Jochen Sandig has lived in Berlin since 1989. In 1990 he was involved in the founding of the Kunsthaus Tacheles. From 1990 to 1994 he was chairman of the Board of the Tacheles eV for both financing and operation as well as responsible for the artistic program. In 1993, together with Sasha Waltz he founded the international dance ensemble Sasha Waltz & Guests. Kunsthaus Tacheles
The Kunsthaus Tacheles (English: ''Art House Tacheles'') was an art center in Berlin, Germany, a large () building and sculpture park on Oranienburger Straße, in the sub-neighborhood of Spandauer Vorstadt in the Mitte district. Huge, colorful graffiti-style murals were painted on the exterior walls, and modern art sculptures were featured inside. The building housed an artist collective from 1990 until 2012. Originally called Friedrichstraßenpassage, it was built in 1907–1908 as a department store opposite the synagogue. During World War II it served as a Nazi prison for a short while. Under GDR authorities it was later partially demolished. After the Berlin Wall had come down in 1989, it was taken over by artists, who called it ''Tacheles'', Yiddish for "straight talking". Sasha Waltz
Sasha Alexandra Waltz (born 8 March 1963, Karlsruhe) is a German choreographer, dancer and leader of the dance company Sasha Waltz and Guests. Biography Waltz is the daughter of an architect and a curator. At the age of five years she had her first dance lesson in Karlsruhe with Waltraud Kornhass, a student of Mary Wigman. From 1983 until 1986, Waltz studied at the School For New Dance Development in Amsterdam. Between 1986 and 1987, Waltz did further training in New York. During that period she was a dancer for Pooh Kaye, Yoshiko Chuma & School of Hard Knocks and Lisa Kraus. After that, she collaborated intensely with choreographers, visual artists and musicians such as Tristan Honsinger, Frans Poelstra, Mark N Tompkins, and David Zambrano. Sophiensæle
The Sophiensæle (also occasionally spelled as Sophiensäle or Sophiensaele) is a venue for independent performance, theater, and dance, in Berlin, Germany. It is located in the courtyard of Sophienstraße 18, in the Berlin district of Mitte. History The Sophiensæle was founded in 1996 by Sasha Waltz, Jochen Sandig, Jo Fabian, Zebu Kluth, and Dirk Cieslak. The first performances took place the same year, beginning with the play ''Durchgehend Geöffnet'' by Dirk Cieslak and Armin Dallapiccola, in February and March. The official opening of the Sophiensæle followed on September 26, 1996 with the premiere of Sasha Waltz’s production ''Allee der Kosmonauten''. The (Theatre on Lehniner Square) is a famous theatre in the Wilmersdorf district of Berlin, located on the Kurfürstendamm boulevard. It is a conversion of the ''Universum'' cinema, built according to plans designed by Erich Mendelsohn in 1928. History The cinema was the centrepiece of the wider ''WOGA'' housing complex, designed by Mendelsohn in a New Objectivity-styled urban development ensemble, with a shopping walkway, apartment blocks, lawns, and a tennis court in the back.
