Jerk (music Genre)
Jerk is a microgenre of hip-hop that emerged in New York City during the early 2020s, drawing inspiration from the original wave of jerk rap, known as jerkin' in the street dance culture, that gained popularity in the early 2010s. The scene later saw wider prominence in the United Kingdom. Notable jerk acts include Xaviersobased, Phreshboyswag, Fakemink, YT, Len and Fimiguerrero. Earlier works by rappers Nettspend and Yhapojj also pioneered and helped popularize the genre. History In 2020, New York rapper Xaviersobased alongside his collective 1c34 reimagined the sound of jerk rap into a completely different style, adapting its framework to fit the evolving aesthetics of hyperpop and underground rap. They are credited with spearheading and popularizing the movement which was then further developed by Californian producer kashpaint. This new style of jerk rap blended elements of cloud rap, digicore, Milwaukee lowend and plugg, with songs being released and proliferated on mu ...

Plugg Music
Plugg music is a sub-genre of trap music that emerged in the mid-2010s via online distribution on the SoundCloud platform. It was popularized by melodic Southern hip hop artists, and is characterized by deep 808 basslines, sparkly melodies, and melodic vocals. Unlike mainstream trap, which is defined by bombastic production and rattling hi-hat drum patterns, plugg is said to be dreamy, laidback, atmospheric, spacey, airy, and minimal. The genre is also described as having an overall lush and jazzy atmosphere; ethereal, luscious multi-instrumental harmonies and melodies; sparse, disjointed, and relaxed drum programming with few hi-hats; and thick basslines. Instead of the hi-hats in mainstream trap, plugg beats mainly employ beat skips, crash cymbals, and punctuated accent snares on half-beats. As described by a critic, plugg is best intended to be heard alone, "experience .. nthe way it's intended: as a day-long trance in your isolated abode". Vocally, plugg ranges from ...

Underground Rap
Underground hip hop (also known as underground rap or simply underground) traditionally refers to hip hop music that is outside the general mainstream canon or counter-cultural in nature, usually with a heavy emphasis on emotion, lyricism, and/or social consciousness. Being outside of the mainstream, it is common for artists or songs that are considered "underground" to have little commercial success, though this is not a requirement, as many have gained massive followings, especially in the streaming era. In recent years, the term has also been used to refer to hip hop subgenres that incorporate themes of trap, plugg, milwaukee lowend, drill or rage which often feature melodic vocals with heavy use of Auto-Tune (or similar pitch correction tools) with virtually no focus on lyricism or connection to counterculture. Despite little overlap between the traditional and modern definitions, both are still commonly used. "The Underground" also refers to the community of musicia ...

Hyperpop
Hyperpop (sometimes called bubblegum bass) is a loosely defined electronic music movement and microgenre that predominantly originated during the early 2010s in the United Kingdom. It is characterised by an exaggerated or maximalist take on popular music, and typically integrates pop and avant-garde sensibilities while drawing on elements commonly found in electronic, rock, hip hop, and dance music. Deriving influence from a varied range of sources, the origins of the hyperpop scene are commonly traced to the output of English musician A. G. Cook and his record label PC Music, as well as associated artists such as Sophie and Charli XCX. The approach received wider attention in August 2019 when Glenn MacDonald, an employee of Spotify, used the term "hyperpop" for the name of a playlist featuring artists such as Cook and 100 gecs. The style gained popularity among younger people through social media platforms like TikTok, which boosted its exposure particularly during the ...
