Jean-Jacques Burnel
Jean-Jacques Burnel (born 21 February 1952) is an English musician, best known as the bass guitarist and co-lead vocalist with the punk rock band the Stranglers. He is the only original member to remain in the band. Life and career Burnel performing on French TV in 1983 Jean-Jacques Burnel was born in Notting Hill, London, to French parents. His family owned a restaurant where his father worked as a chef. As a child, as the son of French immigrants, he was often the victim of mockery from his schoolmates, which later led him to call himself John to disguise his French origins. This early encounter with xenophobia would also have an impact on his explosive temper in life and on stage as well as on the way he plays. The Stranglers
The Stranglers are an English rock music, rock band formed in 1974. Scoring 23 UK top 40 singles and 20 UK top 40 albums to date in a career spanning five decades, the Stranglers are one of the longest-surviving bands to have originated in the UK punk scene. Formed as the Guildford Stranglers in Guildford, Surrey, in early 1974, they originally built a following within the mid-1970s Pub rock (United Kingdom), pub rock scene. While their aggressive, no-compromise attitude had them identified by the media with the emerging UK punk rock scene that followed, their idiosyncratic approach rarely followed any single musical genre, and the group went on to explore a variety of musical styles, from new wave music, new wave, art rock and gothic rock through the sophisti-pop of some of their 1980s output. ''The Count of Monte Cristo'' () is an adventure novel by the French writer Alexandre Dumas. It was serialised from 1844 to 1846, and published in book form in 1846. Taxi Girl were a French new wave band, adopting the New Romantic aesthetics of the time, such as clashing red and black clothing, synthesizer-led songs, and taking influence from mythology and literature. The group existed between 1978 and 1986, producing 5 mini-albums, and one full-length album, ''Seppuku''. Their early success is attributed to two singles, "Mannequin" in 1979 and "Cherchez le garçon" in 1980. Their music was said to capture the energy of The Stooges, mixed with the retro-futuristic soundscapes of Kraftwerk. Polyphonic Size is a Belgian new wave band founded in 1979 in Brussels by Roger-Marc Vande Voorde. Mixing electric guitars and synthesizers with French and English lyrics (and sometimes German or Japanese lyrics), most of Polyphonic Size records were produced by Jean-Jacques Burnel, from The Stranglers. History 1979-1984 The first Polyphonic Size record, Algorhythmic EP, was released in December 1979, on Sandwich Records, a new independent record label founded by Michel Lambot. ''Fire & Water'' is an album by Jean-Jacques Burnel and Dave Greenfield of the Stranglers, released on 11 November 1983 on the Epic record label. It is the soundtrack for the film ''Ecoutez Vos Murs'', directed by Vincent Coudanne. Burnel is reported to have said in 2011 that the film was shown once at a premiere screening in London, never to be seen again. The track "Rain and Dole and Tea" features Maggie Reilly, best known for her collaboration with the composer Mike Oldfield, on vocals, which in a remixed form was released as a single. The album spent one week at number 94 in the UK Albums Chart. ''Fire & Water'' was reissued on CD by Edsel Records in April 2008, remastered from the original tapes. This features the remix of "Rain and Dole and Tea" as a bonus track. Dave Greenfield
David Paul Greenfield (29 March 1949 – 3 May 2020) was an English keyboardist, singer and songwriter who was a member of rock band the Stranglers. He joined the band in 1975, within a year of its formation, and played with them for 45 years until his death. Early life and education Greenfield was born on 29 March 1949 in the south coast seaside resort of Brighton. He learnt guitar from an older schoolmate and, after leaving school, played for a year in bands at American bases in Germany. Career Greenfield tried to develop a music career in Germany, and played in bands in Britain as well as Germany while also working in his father's printing business and as a piano tuner. In Britain, his bands included the Initials, the Blue Maxi (on the single " Here Comes Summer", released by Major Minor Records in 1970), and progressive rock bands Rusty Butler and Credo.
