Jayu Quta (Ladislao Cabrera)
__NOTOC__ Jayu Quta (Aymara ''jayu'' salt, ''quta'' lake, "salt lake", also spelled ''Jayo Khota, Jayu Khota, Jayu Kkota'') is a maar partially filled with water, in the Bolivian Altiplano, north of the Salar de Uyuni and east of the Salar de Coipasa. It is situated in the Oruro Department, Ladislao Cabrera Province, Salinas de Garci Mendoza Municipality, Villa Esperanza Canton. It was originally misidentified as a meteorite impact crater. A smaller maar, named Ñiq'i Quta ("mud lake", ''Nekhe Khota, Nekhe Kkota''), is located southwest of Jayu Quta. Volcanic activity of phreatomagmatic nature formed the maars, probably during the Holocene. During this activity, basalt-trachyandesite rocks were ejected, including xenoliths consisting of granite. These maars belong to a group of volcanic centres in the Altiplano. These centres mostly consist of lava flows of trachyandesitic to dacitic composition. Trachyandesite
Trachyandesite is an extrusive igneous rock with a composition between trachyte and andesite. It has little or no free quartz, but is dominated by sodic plagioclase and alkali feldspar. It is formed from the cooling of lava enriched in alkali metals and with an intermediate content of silica. The term ''trachyandesite'' had begun to fall into disfavor by 1985 but was revived to describe extrusive igneous rocks falling into the S3 field of the TAS classification. These are divided into sodium-rich benmoreite and potassium-rich latite. Trachyandesitic magma can produce explosive Plinian eruptions, such as happened at Tambora in 1815. A maar is a broad, low-relief volcanic crater caused by a phreatomagmatic eruption (an explosion which occurs when groundwater comes into contact with hot lava or magma). A maar characteristically fills with water to form a relatively shallow crater lake which may also be called a maar. The name comes from a Moselle Franconian dialect word used for the circular lakes of the Daun area of Germany. Tunupa
Tunupa is a dormant volcano in the Potosí Department of southwestern Bolivia. It stands on the northern side of the Salar de Uyuni at an elevation of on the Bolivian Altiplano. Tunupa was active in the Pleistocene, with most of the volcano constructed by lava flows that erupted between 1.36 and 1.56 million years ago. Later glaciers developed on the mountain. There is a cave with several mummies about half way up and an ancient village at the foot with a modest "salt hotel". Geography and geomorphology Tunupa is located in Bolivia, at the centre of the Altiplano about east of the main volcanic arc. A volcanic bomb or lava bomb is a mass of partially molten rock (tephra) larger than 64 mm (2.5 inches) in diameter, formed when a volcano ejects viscous fragments of lava during an eruption. Ch'iyar Qullu (Oruro)
Ch'iyar Qullu (Aymara ''ch'iyara'' black, ''qullu'' mountain, "black mountain", also spelled ''Chiar Kkollu'') is a volcanic centre in Bolivia. It is located in the Oruro Department, Ladislao Cabrera Province, Salinas de Garci Mendoza Municipality, northeast of Salinas de Garci Mendoza, near a maar named Jayu Quta ("salt lake"). Dacite () is a volcanic rock formed by rapid solidification of lava that is high in silica and low in alkali metal oxides.
