Jayabharathi (director)
Jayabharathi (1946 or 1947 – 6 December 2024) was an Indian film director and screenwriter who worked on Tamil films. Regarded as one of the pioneers of alternate cinema in the Tamil film industry, Jayabharathi directed nine films across five decades. Life and career As a film student in the 1970s, Jayabharathi explored the idea of making films in an alternate genre in Tamil cinema and became one of the pioneers of the movement. His first film '' Kudisai'' (1979) was released after he undertook a crowd-funding route in order to raise Rs90,000 to distribute the film for screening, and in order to generate investment, he sold donation tickets and conducted programmes at government colleges. The film won critical acclaim upon release and has since been preserved at the National Film Archives. The Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, is an organisation dedicated to the promotion of literature in the languages of India. ''Uchi Veyil'' () is a 1990 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed by Jayabharathi. Cast * Kuppuswamy as Duraiswamy * Vijay as Shankar * Srividya * Delhi Ganesh as Sabhapathy Production Shot in 13 days, ''Uchi Veyil'' was directed by Jayabharathi, the screenplay was written by Ravindran Ramamurthy based on a story by Indira Parthasarathy, and produced by T. M. Sundaram under Jwala Film on a shoestring budget of ₹4.8 lakh (worth ₹1.2 crore in 2021 prices) within 8 days. Debutant Kuppuswamy who was 75 years old at that time and was struggling for so many years to become an actor in films was chosen as lead actor of the film. ''Rendum Rendum Anju'' () is a 1988 Indian Tamil-language psychological thriller film directed and co-written by Jayabharathi. The film stars Sarath Babu and Ambika, with Chandrasekhar, Nassar, Vennira Aadai Moorthy, Senthil and Leo Prabhu in supporting roles. It was released on 3 June 1988. Plot Shanthi is a superstitious woman, but her husband Balu is not. Shanthi later believes an astrologer's prediction of Balu's death. Cast Production ''Rendum Rendum Anju'' was made "on the lines of" Alfred Hitchcock's film ''Vertigo'' (1958). She is one of the four Tamil writers asked by the United States Library of Congress to record their voice as part of the South Asian article on Sivashankari.
