Jay Westervelt
Jay Westerveld (frequently misspelled ''Westervelt'' and ''Westerveldt'') is an ecologist and researcher of habitats associated with endangered species including the clam shrimp, bog turtle, and the Acris crepitans, northern cricket frog. Westerveld coined the term "greenwashing". Career In 1986, Westerveld coined the term "greenwash" in an essay examining practices of the hotel industry. In 2009, Westerveld described a new population of rare clam shrimp, the fourth population recorded in New York state out of approximately a dozen worldwide. He was also responsible for locating the habitat of additional members of a recently discovered species of frog. Between 2008 and 2010, Westerveld opposed construction on the Glenmere mansion restoration project. Clam Shrimp
Clam shrimp are a group of bivalved branchiopod crustaceans that resemble the unrelated bivalved molluscs. They are extant and also known from the fossil record, from at least the Devonian period and perhaps before. They were originally classified in the former order Conchostraca, which later proved to be paraphyletic, because water fleas are nested within clam shrimps. Clam shrimp are now divided into three orders, Cyclestherida, Laevicaudata, and Spinicaudata, in addition to the fossil family Leaiidae. Bog Turtle
The bog turtle (''Glyptemys muhlenbergii'') is a critically endangered species of semiaquatic turtle in the family Emydidae. The species is endemic to the eastern United States. It was first scientifically described in 1801 after an 18th-century survey of Pennsylvania. The smallest North American turtle, its carapace measures about long when fully grown. Although the bog turtle is similar in appearance to the painted or spotted turtles, its closest relative is actually the somewhat larger wood turtle. The bog turtle can be found from Vermont in the north, south to Georgia, and west to Pennsylvania. Diurnal and secretive, it spends most of its time buried in mud and – during the winter months – in hibernation. The bog turtle is omnivorous, feeding mainly on small invertebrates. The Glenmere mansion is a luxury hotel and spa overlooking Glenmere Lake, approximately 50 miles northwest of New York City in Orange County, New York.
