Jamie Stewart (English Musician)
James Alec Stewart (born 31 January 1964) is a retired British musician who was the bassist of the post-punk/ hard rock band The Cult. He recorded on The Cult's first four albums, ''Dreamtime'', ''Love'', ''Electric'' and ''Sonic Temple''. Early life Stewart was born in Harrow, Middlesex, on 31 January 1964. His mother, Myra (née Kidd), was a dancer with the International Ballet, and his father, Donald Stewart, was a violinist with the London Symphony Orchestra. Performance career Stewart's musical career began playing guitar in Harrow-based band Ritual. Ritual gigged extensively in London's gothic rock/post-punk scene but rarely outside. Ritual's first output was a four-song radio session for BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel in 1981. This led the way for a self-compiled and released cassette album, ''Songs for a Dead King'', which was available only at gigs and by mail order. The Cult
The Cult are an English rock band formed in 1983 in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Before settling on their current name in January 1984, the band performed under the name Death Cult, which was an evolution of the name of lead singer Ian Astbury's previous band Southern Death Cult. They gained a dedicated following in the United Kingdom in the mid-1980s as a post-punk/ gothic rock band, with singles such as "She Sells Sanctuary", before breaking into the mainstream in the United States in the late 1980s establishing themselves as a hard rock band with singles such as " Love Removal Machine". Kid Chaos, also known as Haggis (born Stephen Harris), is a British rock bassist and guitarist who played in incarnations of hard rock bands Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction, The Cult and The Four Horsemen as well as guesting with '' Appetite for Destruction'' era Guns N' Roses. History Harris was born in 1966, in Swansea, Wales. He joined his first group, The Autonomes, at age 13, . At 16 he failed most of his O-levels and left school. Harris enrolled in the Youth Enterprise Scheme, setting up a record label called Fierce Recordings with a friend. ''The Tube'' was a United Kingdom music television programme, which ran for five series, from 5 November 1982 to 24 April 1987. It was filmed in Newcastle upon Tyne and produced for Channel 4 by Tyne Tees Television, which had previously produced the similar music show '' Alright Now'' and the music-oriented youth show '' Check it Out'' for ITV; production of the latter ended in favour of ''The Tube''. Spiritwalker
"Spiritwalker" is a single by the English rock band The Cult and was released in 11 May 1984. "Spiritwalker" is the lead single from the ''Dreamtime'' album, although it was released nearly five months before the album was released. Song origins "Spiritwalker" was written while the group was still called Death Cult. It was never recorded by the group but was integrated into their set list during their second United Kingdom tour in late 1983. The song, musically, was much different, but, lyrically, it was nearly the same as the final recorded version. The song has its origins with Ian Astbury's earlier group, Southern Death Cult. On 29 October 1981, at the group's second live performance ever, Southern Death Cult played Queen's Hall in Bradford, England. Nigel Preston
Nigel Preston (4 April 1963, Birmingham, England – 1 April 1992) was an English drummer. He was a founding member of the Cult. He also played and recorded with Theatre of Hate, Sex Gang Children, the Baby Snakes, the Gun Club and DeLuca. He appeared on ''Top of the Pops'' for the first time with Theatre of Hate in 1982, playing their Top 40 single "Do You Believe in the West World". He played on Sex Gang's 1983 single " Mauritia Mayer", then switched places with Death Cult's drummer Ray Mondo that September. His biggest hit was "She Sells Sanctuary" by the Cult from their ''Love'' album. Recorded in March 1985, the song was released as their fourth single and hit No. 15 in the UK Singles Chart. Situation Two (a.k.a. Situation 2) was a British independent record label founded in 1981 by Peter Kent as an offshoot of the Beggars Banquet label. At the time, Beggars Banquet releases were often distributed by WEA; to appeal to the indie audience and to get releases into the UK Indie Chart, Situation Two, as well as its sister label 4AD (which Kent had co-founded a year earlier with Ivo Watts-Russell, but soon left), were created. Beggars Banquet Records is a British independent record label. Beggars Banquet started as a chain of record shops owned by Martin Mills and Nick Austin and is part of the Beggars Group of labels. History In 1977, spurred by the prevailing DIY aesthetics of the British punk rock movement (then at the height of its popularity), Martin Mills and Nick Austin founded a record label to release records under the Beggars Banquet imprint. Billy Duffy
William Henry Duffy (born 12 May 1961) is an English rock musician, best known as the guitarist of the band The Cult. Early life Duffy was born and grew up in Manchester. He has Irish and Jewish heritage and ancestry. He began playing the guitar at the age of fourteen, being influenced by the music of Queen, Thin Lizzy, The Who, Aerosmith, Blue Öyster Cult, and the early work of Led Zeppelin. In the late 1970s he became involved in the punk movement, being influenced by the New York Dolls, The Stooges, Buzzcocks, and The Sex Pistols, as well as AC/DC (which he views as a proto-punk group). He started playing lead guitar with a number of different punk acts whilst still in school in the late 1970s, including the Studio Sweethearts.
