James R. Wilkins, Jr.
James R. Wilkins Jr. (born April 29, 1945) is an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and community leader, recognized for his contributions to the Northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, South Carolina, and Montana. He is the son of James R. Wilkins Sr., a businessman and philanthropist in the region. Wilkins has been involved in retail, banking, wildlife conservation, and numerous philanthropic initiatives throughout his career. Early life James Richard "Jimmy" Wilkins Jr. was born in Washington, D.C. When he was two years old, his family moved to Winchester, Virginia after his father’s discharge from military service. In 1947, James R. Wilkins Sr. opened Wilkins ShoeCenter, marking the family's entry into the retail business, in Winchester. John Handley High School
John Handley High School (usually referred to as JHHS) is an endowed public high school located in the city of Winchester, Virginia. It is a part of Winchester Public Schools. It was founded by a grant from Judge John Handley, hence the school mascot, the Judges. Construction on John Handley High School started in 1922, and continues to the present day. Recently, the school completed the final phase of its multimillion-dollar renovation with the addition of an 8-lane track and a turf football field. The school is planning renovations to its tennis courts in the upcoming years, due in part to the girls' three-peat state champions. The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival ("The Bloom") is a 14-day festival held annually in spring in Winchester, Virginia. First held in 1924, it is one of the oldest civic celebrations in the Commonwealth of Virginia. History The festival was first held Saturday, May 3, 1924, and was originally celebrated as a one-day event (although not held in 1942–1945 due to World War II).
