James Enos Ray Jr.
James Enoy Ray Jr. (January 12, 1874 – September 10, 1934), better known as J. Enos Ray Jr., was an American politician and lawyer from Maryland. He served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1904 to 1908. Early life James Enoy Ray Jr. was born on January 12, 1874, in Chillum, Prince George's County, Maryland, to Gertrude (née Shreve) and James Enos Ray. He attended public schools in Chillum. He graduated from the Maryland Agricultural College (later the University of Maryland) in 1892 with a Bachelor of Arts. He graduated from Georgetown Law School with a Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws. He was admitted to the bar on April 8, 1897. Career Ray was a Democrat. Ray served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, representing Prince George's County, from 1904 to 1908. He served as the speaker pro tempore in 1906 and speaker of the house in 1908. The Maryland State Archives serves as the central depository for government records of permanent value. Its holdings date from Maryland's founding in 1634, and include colonial and state executive, legislative, and judicial records; county probate, land, and court records; church records; business records; state publications and reports; and special collections of private papers, maps, photographs, and newspapers. These records are kept in a humidity and temperature controlled environment and any necessary preservation measures are conducted in the Archives' conservation laboratory. The Maryland Senate, sometimes referred to as the Maryland State Senate, is the upper house of the General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maryland. Composed of 47 senators elected from an equal number of constituent single-member districts, the Senate is responsible, along with the Maryland House of Delegates, for passage of laws in Maryland, and for confirming executive appointments made by the Governor of Maryland. It evolved from the upper house of the colonial assembly created in 1650 when Maryland was a proprietary colony controlled by Cecilius Calvert.
